A gas leak in University Place prompted an evacuation order Tuesday evening, with emergency crews and Puget Sound Energy working to identify the source and residents within a 0.1-mile radius told to leave. The response was centered near 71st Avenue Court West and 57th Street Court West, and officials asked the public to stay away.
West Pierce Fire & Rescue said crews were on scene and PSE had arrived but had not yet located the leak’s source. Affected residents had been notified, while the initial alert did not provide information about injuries, property damage, or when the evacuation order would be lifted.
Crews Continue Searching For The Leak
Puget Sound Energy says anyone who smells gas or suspects a leak should leave immediately, avoid switches, phones, or anything else that could create a spark, and call 911 or PSE from a safe location. People inside the evacuation area should follow responders’ instructions and not return until officials give the all-clear, according to PSE safety guidance.

The City of University Place says its U.P. Alert system sends public-safety updates, including notices about hazards and evacuations, by text or email. For now, neighbors and drivers are being asked to avoid the area while emergency crews and utility workers continue the response.
