Tacoma Narrows Airport in Gig Harbor will throw open its gates on Saturday, August 29, for a free public open house featuring aircraft displays, STEM activities for kids, and tributes to the military. Gates open at 9 a.m. at the airport, located at 1202 26th Ave. NW, with a welcome ceremony set for 9:30 a.m. and general activities running from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
According to Pierce County, the day will include visits to airport businesses, displays and booths, and airport activities and operations alongside the STEM programming and military honors. Pierce County Executive Ryan Mello and District 7 Councilmember Robyn Denson are scheduled to deliver official welcome remarks at 9:30 a.m. in the airport's Rotary Aviation Zone, according to Pierce County. The main public entrance gate sits between the air traffic control tower and the Rotary Aviation Zone, with general parking designated along the shoulder of 26th Avenue NW and accessible parking reserved in The Hub restaurant lot, the county notes.
What's Planned Between the Flybys
Scheduled activities between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. include weather-dependent aircraft flybys, aviation career informational exhibits, food trucks, and dining at on-site restaurant The Hub, as reported by MyNorthwest. Organizers have been clear that Airport Day is not an airshow and will not include aerobatic demonstrations, keeping the focus on education and community connection rather than stunt flying. Admission is free.
Nearby residents should brace for some disruption to their Saturday routines. The county has warned that people living near the airport may see increased air traffic, hear additional air traffic noise, and experience busier roads near the airport as visitors arrive throughout the day.
A Busy Field With No Room to Grow
Tacoma Narrows Airport, known by its FAA identifier TIW, spans 568 acres and features an air traffic control tower, an Instrument Landing System, and a single asphalt runway measuring 5,002 feet long by 100 feet wide, per Pierce County. In 2023, the airfield recorded 95,522 total aircraft flight operations and served as the home base for roughly 130 aircraft, according to county figures.
The airport opened in 1963 as Tacoma Industrial Airport, was renamed Tacoma Narrows Airport in 1981, and operated under City of Tacoma ownership until Pierce County purchased it in late 2008. It is one of two aviation facilities owned and managed by the county, alongside Pierce County Airport-Thun Field in South Hill near Puyallup.
Despite its heavy general aviation traffic, county officials have confirmed there are no plans to extend the 5,002-foot runway, a policy that keeps the facility oriented toward business jets and general aviation rather than commercial airline service. A Washington State Commercial Aviation Coordinating Commission study found that expanding TIW for commercial passenger flights faced strong opposition from county officials and local residents, citing adjacent residential development and constraints tied to Narrows Bridge transit.
From Airshow to Open House
The event's low-key, educational format marks a shift from the airport's past. Before adopting the current Airport Day model, Tacoma Narrows Airport hosted larger public air shows, including the Tacoma Freedom Fair Wings & Wheels event that began in 2011, according to FLYING Magazine. That history helps explain why today's version leans on STEM booths and military tributes rather than aerobatic performances, reflecting the same planning sensitivities that have kept the runway from expanding.
