A 26-year-old coach and school aide at Timber Creek High School in Gloucester Township is behind bars after investigators say he had a sexual relationship with a student that lasted from June through August. Joel Deanley Jr. was arrested Wednesday and remanded to the Camden County Correctional Facility to await a detention hearing in Superior Court.
Deanley faces three counts of second-degree sexual assault and three counts of third-degree endangering the welfare of a child, according to FOX 29 Philadelphia. Camden County Prosecutor Grace Macaulay said the investigation began after a student came forward and reported having a sexual relationship with Deanley, per Daily Voice. Gloucester Township Police Chief Anthony Minosse offered the same account of how the case began, the outlet reported.
Coaching Roles Spanned Three Sports
At Timber Creek, Deanley wore several hats. He worked as a school aide while also serving as an assistant football coach, an assistant coach for girls spring track, and the head coach for both boys and girls winter track, per Daily Voice's reporting. That mix of classroom and athletic access placed him in regular contact with students across multiple seasons of the school year.
His ties to local sports run deeper than his time at Timber Creek. Deanley played high school football as a defensive back and running back at nearby Overbrook High School in Sicklerville, according to roster records from Rowan University Athletics. He went on to play defensive back for the Rowan Profs while majoring in radio, television, and film, per the university's athletics records. Years earlier, in 2012, he coached wide receivers and defensive backs for the Gloucester Township Stallions youth football team during a South Jersey Elite Invitational Youth Football League championship season, as reported by Gloucester Township Patch at the time.
Charges Carry Serious Statutory Weight
Under New Jersey law, sexual penetration is classified as second-degree sexual assault when the accused holds supervisory, disciplinary, or occupational authority over a minor victim or over a high school student under age 22, per the relevant statute cited by Justia Law. Separately, engaging in sexual conduct with a minor that impairs or debauches the child's morals constitutes child endangerment under state law, a charge that can carry state prison time and mandatory Megan's Law sex offender registration upon conviction, according to the Law Office of Anthony J. Timber Creek Regional High School sits on Jarvis Road in the Erial section of Gloucester Township and enrolls more than 1,100 students in grades 9 through 12, per background information on the school. It is one of three high schools, alongside Triton Regional and Highland Regional, operated by the Black Horse Pike Regional School District, which serves students across Bellmawr, Gloucester Township, and Runnemede in Camden County.

Law enforcement officials say the investigation remains active as they work to determine whether there are additional victims. It remains unclear when district officials were first alerted to the allegations or what Deanley's current employment status is following his arrest.
