Detroit is getting a new kind of tire store, one designed to make car enthusiasts linger instead of simply dropping off the keys and fleeing. Goodyear plans to turn its New Center operation into Motor City Garage, a showroom, service center and gathering spot timed to land just before the region’s biggest automotive spectacle. For a city that treats car culture like a second language, the branding is hardly subtle.

Goodyear plans to unveil Motor City Garage on Saturday, Aug. 15, positioning the first Detroit retail concept as both a vehicle service center and a destination for enthusiasts. As reported by the Detroit Free Press, the company drew inspiration from immersive flagships such as Nike’s House of Innovation. The pitch is aimed at serious gearheads and everyday SUV drivers who would prefer vehicle care to feel a little less like a chore.

Behind the branding, the shop will still handle the unglamorous but necessary work: preventive maintenance, tire sales and installation, oil changes, alignments, brake service, battery replacement and free inspections. Goodyear’s official listing for the New Center location confirms services including oil changes, battery replacement, brake work and alignment checks. The company is also bringing its mobile garage model into the broader mix, with service vans designed to handle tire installation and other work at customers’ homes.

More Garage Than Waiting Room

The more Detroit-specific hook will be inside the showroom. Planned displays include rotating classic cars, vehicle memorabilia, a custom one-of-a-kind Detroit-themed Goodyear tire and a Mustang associated with Mary Tyler Moore’s television opening, supplied by Ford’s Motor Heritage Collection. GM’s Heritage Center is expected to contribute vehicles as the displays change.

Motor City Garage will also sell Goodyear-branded merchandise and host community events, watch parties and pop-up vendor partnerships. The idea is to make the shop useful even when a customer is not shopping for tires, which is a fairly ambitious upgrade from the usual waiting-room coffee and a television tuned to daytime cable.

Opening Lands During Detroit’s Biggest Car Weekend

The timing is not subtle. The official Woodward Dream Cruise schedule puts this year’s main event on Saturday, Aug. 15, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.; organizers say it draws more than 1 million visitors and more than 40,000 vehicles across the Metro Detroit corridor. That makes opening day less of a quiet ribbon-cutting and more of a stress test with a very large audience.

Goodyear is adding extra theater overhead: Two company blimps are scheduled to fly over Detroit for the cruise, marking the first double-blimp appearance there in nearly two decades, according to the Detroit Free Press report. The company flew one blimp over the 2025 cruise, so this year’s plan is a conspicuously bigger show. If nothing else, the signage should be impossible to miss.

Motor City Garage is part of Goodyear’s two-year effort to rethink how it meets customers, but Detroit is a particularly on-brand place to test the idea. In a city where the car is not merely transportation but a local dialect, a tire shop with a little showroom swagger may have found the right neighborhood.
