Grand Rapids has a new kind of neighborhood hangout, where a Hawaiian-inspired plate lunch, an Italian frozen dessert and a cold beer can all happen within a few steps of one another. Picnic on Wealthy pairs permanent food trucks with a landscaped garden built for lingering, complete with shaded seating, string lights, hammocks and a fire pit.
The outdoor gathering space opened in May in the former Outside Coffee Co. location near the East Hills neighborhood, with Pacific Moon and Waldorf Creamery serving as its anchor vendors, according to MLive. The result is less a quick food-truck stop than a summer destination where people can settle in for dinner, dessert and a little neighborhood people-watching.
Pacific Moon brings South Pacific flavors to the courtyard, with a menu shaped by Hawaiian and Indonesian influences. Waldorf Creamery, the rebranded Grand Rapids business formerly known as Semifreddo, adds fresh cheeses, sandwiches and semifreddo-style desserts, as AOL reported.
Food Trucks With A Brewery Next Door
The setup becomes more useful once the neighboring taproom enters the picture. Holland-based Our Brewing Company now operates a Grand Rapids location next door, creating a built-in pairing of food-truck fare, outdoor seating and craft drinks.
Our Brewing Company lists its Wealthy Street taproom at 738 Wealthy Street SE and offers beer, wine, cider and cocktails, while its business model welcomes outside food. In practical terms, that means guests can grab a plate from Pacific Moon or a dessert from Waldorf Creamery without giving up their table or leaving the garden atmosphere.
A Garden Designed For Staying Awhile
Picnic on Wealthy occupies 734 Wealthy Street SE and leans heavily into the kind of casual, open-air design that makes a food court feel more like a backyard gathering. The space includes picnic tables, Adirondack chairs, mature trees, string lights, hammocks, and a fenced courtyard, according to Uptown Grand Rapids.
The concept was partly inspired by Pacific Northwest food-pod culture, where multiple small food businesses share a communal setting instead of each carrying the full cost of a traditional restaurant. That gives Picnic a flexible lineup while keeping the experience anchored by vendors people can return to regularly.
For now, the two permanent vendors are Pacific Moon and Waldorf Creamery, with the possibility of additional local trucks joining later. With food, drinks, and a shaded place to sit all bundled into one Wealthy Street stop, Picnic on Wealthy is positioning itself as the sort of place that can handle a quick lunch, a full dinner, or the increasingly important after-dinner dessert mission.
