Greenville woke Monday to clear skies and temperatures in the low 70s, but the comfortable start will not last. The Upstate is heading into a stretch of intense heat, with sunny afternoons and highs near 93 degrees Monday and in the mid- to upper-90s by Tuesday and Wednesday.
Monday night will stay mostly clear and dry, with a low near 72 and light southeast winds, according to the latest National Weather Service forecast.
Heat Builds Through Wednesday
Tuesday will bring sunshine, a high near 95 and a heat index as high as 101. Wednesday looks even hotter, near 96 degrees, while forecasters say triple-digit heat-index readings could affect lower elevations from Tuesday through Friday.
That combination of heat and humidity can raise the risk of heat-related illness, especially during afternoon outdoor activities. Residents should take frequent breaks in the shade, drink plenty of water and check on older adults, young children and anyone working outdoors.
Heat-related illness can lead to hospitalizations and emergency department visits.
Storm Chances Hold Off Until Friday
Thursday will remain sunny and hot near 96 degrees, with only a small chance of rain. Friday stays near 96 but brings a 40% chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2 p.m., with additional storm chances Friday night and Saturday.
Sunday offers the first notable break from the heat, with mostly sunny skies, a high near 86 and a 30% chance of showers or thunderstorms. No watches, warnings or advisories are currently posted for the area.
