A man was shot in the leg Sunday night at a rooftop bar on the Sunset Strip, sending Los Angeles County firefighters rushing him to a hospital and forcing deputies to shut down traffic along one of West Hollywood's busiest corridors. The shooting happened at approximately 8:55 p.m. in the 8400 block of West Sunset Boulevard, and no suspect description or motive had been released as the investigation got underway.
Video captured on the Citizen app and reviewed by CBS Los Angeles indicated the gunfire erupted at Harriet's Rooftop, the elevated lounge on the 9th floor of 1 Hotel West Hollywood at 8490 Sunset Boulevard. The venue, operated in partnership with The h.wood Group, is known for panoramic views and a celebrity clientele, making it one of the more high-profile stops along the Strip's nightlife strip. LA County firefighters transported the wounded man to a hospital for treatment of the leg wound, per the station's report.
West Hollywood does not run its own municipal police force. Instead, the city contracts with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department West Hollywood Station for primary law enforcement, a structure confirmed by LAist. The city considered forming its own department in 2023 but ultimately chose to stick with its LASD contract.
A Growing Web of Sunset Strip Security Tools
Deputies investigating the shooting have more resources at their disposal than they did just a year ago. In July, West Hollywood launched a Drone as First Responder pilot program with the LASD West Hollywood Station, making it the first contract city in Los Angeles County to send police drones ahead of deputies on the ground, according to LAist. Those drones deploy during active calls for service and record continuously from arrival through departure, though it remains unknown whether one was dispatched to this call.
The city has also layered in unarmed personnel to supplement sworn deputies along commercial corridors. In October 2025, West Hollywood shifted its unarmed Security Ambassadors program to Allied Universal Security Services under a 20-month, $10.1 million contract covering foot, bicycle, and kiosk patrols on the Sunset Strip, replacing Block by Block after 12 years in the role, as reported by the Beverly Press. A month earlier, in August 2025, the West Hollywood City Council authorized a separate agreement with Securitas Security Services USA to deploy unarmed Community Safety Officers whose vehicles are integrated directly into sheriff dispatch systems for non-emergency calls.
License Plate Cameras Could Aid the Investigation
Whether the shooter fled on foot or by car remains an open question, but if a vehicle was involved, deputies may be able to lean on the city's camera network. In July, the West Hollywood City Council voted to retain its contract for Flock Safety automated license plate reader cameras, adding new safeguards that block data sharing with federal immigration authorities following privacy concerns raised elsewhere in Southern California, per the Beverly Press.
Sunday's shooting is not the first outbreak of gun violence on this stretch of the Strip. In August 2022, a man was shot and injured inside the About Last Night Lounge & Restaurant in the 8900 block of Sunset Boulevard, less than half a mile west of Sunday's incident, and a suspect was later detained several blocks away by LASD deputies, according to the Los Angeles Times. Just last month, deputies raced to a different scare on the Strip after multiple 911 callers reported a person brandishing what looked like a rocket-propelled grenade near the 9000 block of Sunset Boulevard — a device later determined to be a non-working replica, as Hoodline previously reported. Under California law, brandishing a replica weapon in a threatening manner is a misdemeanor, while assault with an actual firearm under Penal Code Section 245(a)(2) is a felony punishable by up to four years in state prison, with additional sentence enhancements possible if the victim suffers great bodily injury.
No arrests had been announced as of Sunday night, and deputies have not released a suspect description. It also remains unclear what security screening, if any, exists at hotel rooftop venues like Harriet's, or whether investigators have identified surveillance footage from inside or around 1 Hotel West Hollywood.
