A robbery near Rainier Avenue South and South Walden Street in Seattle's Mount Baker neighborhood turned violent Monday afternoon, leaving a 21-year-old man shot and hospitalized while nearby schools briefly locked their doors as police searched for suspects.
Seattle Police officers responded to the scene around 2:21 p.m. Monday and found the victim suffering from gunshot wounds sustained during the robbery, according to KING 5. The 21-year-old was taken to the hospital in stable condition and was able to speak with detectives, the station reported. KIRO 7 initially reported one person hurt in the robbery, with police saying the extent of the person's injuries was unknown at the time and that the number of suspects involved was also unknown.
Police asked the public to stay away from the intersection of Rainier Avenue South and South Walden Street while officers looked for the suspects, per the KIRO 7 report. Schools in the area were placed under a temporary lockdown as a precaution during the search, though that lockdown was lifted once the immediate danger passed. Officers said they would continue investigating the robbery as the search for suspects continued.
A Corridor With a History of Daylight Violence
The intersection sits in Mount Baker, roughly 0.4 miles from Franklin High School, according to property records cited by Compass Real Estate. That proximity has mattered before. Last August, a group of armed, masked suspects robbed a business on Rainier Avenue South near the same school at 5:37 a.m., part of a broader early-morning commercial robbery spree that hit south and southwest Seattle, according to an SPD incident report relayed by KIRO 7. And this past April, Hoodline reported that two men were arrested following a daylight crime spree along the same corridor, including an armed carjacking in the 3400 block of Rainier Avenue South and a pistol-whipping robbery a few blocks over on Claremont Avenue South.
Seattle Public Schools policy dictates that a building lockdown is triggered whenever there is perceived danger or violence in the immediate vicinity, requiring staff to lock doors, close blinds, turn off lights and keep students out of sight. That protocol appears to be what unfolded Monday as officers worked the robbery scene near Franklin High School.
Crime Trends Cut Against a Violent Afternoon
The shooting comes even as Seattle Police data has shown declining robbery numbers in the surrounding precinct. The department's July blotter newsletter reported that robbery offenses in the South Precinct fell 14.61% year-to-date compared with the same period in 2025, while overall reported precinct crime dropped 9.12%. Seattle Police Chief Shon Barnes announced in February that citywide crime fell 18% in 2025 compared with 2024, with homicides down 36% to 37 cases and an 86% homicide clearance rate.
Anyone with information or video related to the robbery is asked to contact 911 or call the SPD Violent Crimes Tip Line, according to FOX 13 Seattle. Investigators have not released a description of the suspects, and it remains unclear whether a vehicle was involved in their escape. The condition and recovery of the 21-year-old victim, along with any arrests, remain open questions as officers continue their investigation.
