Gunfire broke out near a 24-hour Shell station on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in South Sacramento on Thursday evening, sending suspects fleeing before officers could arrive, though police say no injuries have been reported. The shooting was reported in the 5500 block of the boulevard, a busy commercial stretch near Fruitridge Road.
Sacramento Police officers were dispatched around p.m. Thursday to reports of a shooting near the Shell station at 5551 Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, according to Officer Anthony Gamble, a public information officer for the department, as reported by Public Safety News. The station sits on a stretch of the boulevard bordering the Fruitridge Pocket and Avondale neighborhoods, and it operates around the clock with a convenience store and car wash, according to Shell.
Investigators told the outlet that suspects fled the scene before officers arrived, and no suspect information has been released. Police said they were not aware of any victims injured in the incident, though the circumstances that led to the gunfire remain under investigation, per the same account.
A Familiar Stretch of Roadway
This is not the first time gunfire has disrupted the 5500 block. In January 2017, officers responded to a shooting in the same block after a man was shot inside a business and hospitalized with serious injuries, according to the Sacramento Police Department. The broader Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard corridor has seen other violence in recent years, including a December 2024 shooting on the 3000 block in Oak Park that left a man in critical condition after he self-transported to a hospital.
South Sacramento more broadly has logged a string of shootings this year. In June, gunfire in the Meadowview corridor left two people wounded in a Tuesday night shooting. In March, another shooting on Florin Road prompted an air unit response as police tracked down a suspect, and a fatal shooting at a South Sacramento Motel 6 in June left a 21-year-old dead after the shooter fled before deputies arrived.
Ongoing Community Safety Efforts
Sacramento Police Chief Kathy Lester met with residents at the Oak Park Community Center on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in June 2024 to discuss public safety concerns and strategies for curbing summer violent crime, according to Police1. Those community meetings have focused on youth engagement and partnerships with neighborhood groups along the corridor.
Possible Legal Exposure for Suspects
If investigators determine that shots were fired at an occupied vehicle or structure, California Penal Code Section 246 makes that a felony punishable by three, five, or seven years in state prison along with fines up to $10,000, according to Shouse Law Group. Short of that, discharging a firearm in a grossly negligent manner that could result in injury or death falls under Penal Code Section 246.3, a wobbler offense that prosecutors can charge as either a felony carrying up to three years in prison or a misdemeanor carrying up to one year in county jail.
