Someone inside a home on the 400 block of West Princess Street was struck by gunfire fired from the street late Monday night, according to York City Police, who say the victim was taken to an area hospital and is expected to be in good condition. The shots rang out around 10:09 p.m., and detectives are now working to figure out who pulled the trigger and why.
Police say gunfire came from the street into the residence, striking one person inside, according to a news release cited by local21news.com. That person was transported for medical treatment, and detectives are now investigating the circumstances that led to the gunfire. It is not yet clear whether the home or the person inside was specifically targeted.
As reported by FOX43, York City Police are asking anyone with video surveillance footage or information about the shooting to contact Detective Commander Andy Baez at 717-654-5264. The department also wants to hear from anyone who heard gunfire, noticed suspicious activity, or has home security footage from around the time of the shooting.
A Block With a Troubled Recent History
This is not the first violent incident on this stretch of West Princess Street. Just last October, 17-year-old Giovaughni Runningbear was fatally shot inside a vehicle on the same 400 block, a case that led to homicide charges against another 17-year-old, per the same station's earlier reporting.
The block's history stretches back further still. In May 2025, York City Police charged a 36-year-old man with first-degree murder for the October 2021 fatal shooting of Larry Jones, which also happened on the 400 block of West Princess Street. And just two weeks before Monday's shooting, two men were hospitalized after an aggravated assault stabbing on the nearby 600 block of West Princess Street on August 10, according to WHP 580.
What Charges Could Follow
Under Pennsylvania law, knowingly, intentionally, or recklessly discharging a firearm into an occupied structure is classified as a third-degree felony, according to FindLaw. That statute could come into play once investigators identify who fired the shots that struck the home on West Princess Street, though no arrests have been announced.
The victim's treatment likely involved the region's most advanced emergency care. WellSpan York Hospital operates the only accredited Level 1 Trauma Center serving York, Adams, and Franklin counties, a facility that treats more than 2,000 trauma patients a year across a population of over one million residents, according to WellSpan Health.
Citywide Numbers Show Progress, But Not Everywhere
The shooting arrives even as York's overall violence numbers have trended sharply downward in recent years. Homicides in York City fell from a record 23 in 2022 to just 8 in 2023, alongside a 57% drop in non-fatal shootings and a 50% decrease in shots-fired incidents, FOX43 reported in January 2024. Statewide, gun homicides in Pennsylvania dropped 46.5% between 2022 and 2025, falling to 495 total deaths last year, according to data from CeaseFirePA.
Part of that progress is credited to targeted intervention work. York City Police operate a dedicated Group Violence Intervention program aimed at curbing retaliatory, group-related violence through partnerships between law enforcement and the community, according to the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency. Even so, the repeated shootings on West Princess Street suggest that some corridors remain stubbornly vulnerable despite the citywide gains.
