A gun went off in a Downtown Greenville parking lot late Friday night after people got into an argument inside and outside a vehicle, and by the time officers arrived, whoever fired it was already gone. No victims have been reported. Police are still trying to piece together exactly what happened on West Washington Street near the heart of the city's central business district.
According to the FOX Carolina News, the argument broke out around 9:44 p.m. Friday, and a shot was fired during or shortly after the dispute. The Greenville Police Department confirmed it is investigating the reported gunshot in the downtown parking lot, but as of the station's report, no victims had been identified and the suspects had fled the scene before officers got there.
What Investigators Still Don't Know
The station's report does not specify whether the shot was fired from inside the vehicle, from the parking lot itself, or by someone who had already stepped outside the car. It's also unclear how many people were involved in the argument or whether anyone has been identified as a suspect. FOX Carolina News says it plans to learn more about the investigation as it develops.
West Washington Street is in Downtown Greenville, and the City of Greenville has referred to a West Washington Street Parking Deck in a closure notice, according to the City of Greenville.

Any answers investigators eventually provide will need to account for the fact that Greenville enforces a municipal curfew ordinance on Friday and Saturday nights barring unaccompanied minors under 18 from public streets, plazas, and parking structures in the central business district between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., per the City of Greenville. Whether that ordinance has any bearing on Friday's incident is not yet known.
South Carolina law also weighs heavily on how a case like this could unfold legally. Under S.C. Code § 16-17-530, discharging a firearm in a public place or within 50 yards of a public road without lawful cause — or while intoxicated — is a misdemeanor punishable by up to 30 days in jail or a fine, according to the South Carolina Legislature. That statute exists alongside the state's 2024 permitless carry law, which allows adults 18 and older who can legally own firearms to carry handguns openly or concealed without a permit, while still banning reckless or unlawful discharge, per the U.S. Concealed Carry Association.
According to a July 31, 2024 legislative update from the South Carolina State Library, South Carolina citizens have a constitutional right to carry firearms anywhere in the state, subject to exceptions including law-enforcement and detention facilities.
A City Touting Falling Crime Numbers
The incident lands at an odd moment for a city that has spent 2026 highlighting drops in crime. Greenville Police Chief J.H. Thompson told the City Council that overall crime in the city fell more than 20% in the first quarter of 2026 compared to the same period last year, according to the City of Greenville. The city has also discussed longer-term crime trends and population changes.
The department has also highlighted its policing efforts in the city.
Still, the incident highlights the risks officers can face when responding to armed situations in the city. Statewide, weapon-law violations and firearms offenses are also part of the broader context.
