A Coastside Fire engine is headed north to help battle wildfires in Washington, joining a San Mateo County strike team assembled for out-of-state deployment. The move puts a familiar piece of Coastside’s emergency response fleet into a broader firefighting effort far beyond the Half Moon Bay area.
CAL FIRE CZU said today that Coastside Fire Engine 41 was en route as part of San Mateo County Strike Team 2275A. The agency said the strike team would reinforce regional fire suppression efforts and help protect vulnerable communities across state lines, but did not identify the specific fire, destination or expected length of the assignment, according to CAL FIRE CZU.

Engine 41 Serves Coastside’s El Granada Station
Engine 41 is based at the Coastside Fire Protection District’s Station 41 in El Granada. The district serves Half Moon Bay, Montara, Moss Beach, Princeton, El Granada, Miramar and surrounding unincorporated areas across roughly 50 square miles, according to the Coastside Fire Protection District.
Coastside Fire operates three stations and responds to about 2,300 calls each year, meaning an engine sent north is part of a department that has to balance local coverage with the demands of regional and national fire seasons. The district’s service area includes about 30,000 residents along the San Mateo County coast.
California’s Mutual-Aid System Sends Crews Where Needed
The deployment is consistent with the mutual-aid system that allows California fire agencies to share personnel and equipment when wildfire resources are needed elsewhere. CAL FIRE says it can assist other departments when resources are available and can draw on local government fire departments for wildland fire suppression, as outlined by the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.
Coastside has operated through a cooperative agreement with CAL FIRE since 2008, with CAL FIRE providing the district’s operational staffing and management, according to the district. The latest announcement did not say whether Engine 41’s assignment would affect local station staffing or when the crew is expected to return; for now, the engine is being used where Washington’s wildfire response needs additional hands.
