A 38-year-old Hanover man is behind bars in Clearfield County after police say he drove roughly three hours across Pennsylvania to meet someone he believed was a 15-year-old girl, only to find officers waiting for him at a public park with weapons in hand. Michael Alan Beard, who lives on Mumma Avenue in Hanover, was taken into custody the moment he arrived at the meetup location, according to police.
The arrest played out in the Irvin Park area of Curwensville Borough, where Beard showed up expecting to meet the decoy he had been messaging, according to FOX43. Curwensville police say Beard had been communicating with a decoy posing as a 15-year-old girl for close to a year, and that he referred to her as his wife and girlfriend during those exchanges, per the same report from Local21 News. Beard allegedly told the decoy he wanted to have sex with her and shared what investigators described as his obsession with sexually assaulting her, according to Local21 News.
Armed at the Meetup Point
Perhaps the most alarming detail to emerge is that Beard was actively armed when officers moved in at Irvin Park. FOX43 reports that Beard had sent photos of his firearms to the decoy during their online communications, and that he was carrying weapons at the moment of his arrest, raising the stakes of what could have been a far more dangerous encounter for both the intended target and the officers involved.
Investigators say Beard also requested nude photos from the decoy during the course of their messaging, according to Local21 News. He drove roughly three hours from Hanover to Curwensville for the planned meeting, the outlet reports, a trip that took him from York County deep into Clearfield County.
A Yearlong Sting With Local Roots
The operation that led to Beard's arrest was a joint effort between the Curwensville Police Department, led by Officer Joseph Witherite and Chief Rod Witherite, the volunteer group 814PredHunters, and the Clearfield County District Attorney's Office, according to a police report relayed on Facebook. Digital records from 814PredHunters indicate Beard began messaging the group's decoy on the exact same date, nearly a year earlier, that another Hanover resident had been publicly exposed by the same organization, according to a Facebook post from the group.
Following his arrest at the scene, Beard was remanded and is being held at the Clearfield County Jail, according to the Newport Dispatch. His preliminary hearing date and any bail status set by a magisterial district judge have not yet been reported.
Felony Charges Stack Up
Beard faces attempted unlawful contact with a minor, attempted corruption of minors, attempted aggravated indecent assault of a person less than 16 years of age, and criminal use of a communication facility, according to FOX43 and Local21 News.
