A driver is dead, and another remains in critical condition after two vehicles slammed into each other head-on in the middle of Alkire Road in Prairie Township on Thursday afternoon. The crash happened around 3:33 p.m. in front of 6337 Alkire Rd., closing the roadway for cleanup around 6:30 p.m. as investigators worked the scene.
The driver of a brown 2010 Toyota Venza, who had been heading southbound on Alkire Road, was pronounced dead after being taken to a hospital, according to myfox28columbus.com. The driver of a black 2017 Cadillac ATS, who was traveling north on Alkire Road and was the only person in that vehicle, was transported to a hospital in critical condition and remained in that condition as of Thursday. Per 10TV WBNS, the Toyota driver was pronounced dead at OhioHealth Doctors Hospital, while the Cadillac driver was rushed to OhioHealth Riverside Methodist Hospital, a major regional trauma center.
Investigators Focus on Who Crossed the Center Line
The Franklin County Sheriff's Office is investigating the fatal crash and issued a news release confirming deputies responded to the scene. Franklin County Sheriff's Office deputies, along with Prairie and Pleasant townships fire and medics, responded after the two vehicles crashed in the center of the roadway. Investigators are still working to determine which vehicle crossed the center line before the two cars collided, the same report notes.
That question matters under Ohio law. Ohio Revised Code Section 4511.25 requires drivers to stay on the right half of the roadway, permitting a driver to cross the center line only when passing, turning left, or avoiding an obstruction. Failing to keep right is generally treated as a minor misdemeanor in Ohio, though any charges here would depend on what the Crash Investigation Unit determines caused the two vehicles to meet in the center of the road.
Sheriff's Office Seeks Witnesses and Video
The Franklin County Sheriff's Office Crash Investigation Unit is asking anyone with information or video of the collision to call 614-525-6113. The unit handles crash reconstruction for fatal and serious-injury wrecks across unincorporated Franklin County, since Prairie Township — an unincorporated area of roughly 20 square miles serving about 18,000 residents — relies on the sheriff's office rather than a municipal police department for traffic enforcement and crash investigations. Emergency medical response in the township comes from the Prairie Township Fire Department, which runs Station 241 on Inah Avenue and Station 242 on Hubbard Road.
Second Fatal Crash in Prairie Township in Nine Days
Thursday's crash marks the second fatal collision in Prairie Township in just over a week. Hoodline previously reported that a Ford Mustang collided with a turning FedEx tractor-trailer at West Broad Street and Alton Darby Creek Road on July 28, in a crash also investigated by the Franklin County Sheriff's Office and answered by Prairie Township emergency crews, detailed in Hoodline's report on that crash. Residents in western Franklin County have repeatedly raised concerns about speeding and lane violations on Alkire Road during local government traffic safety discussions, according to the Columbus Messenger.
Countywide, the numbers tell a more complicated story. As of July, Ohio State Highway Patrol data showed Franklin County had recorded 56 fatal traffic crashes in 2026 — 53 urban and 3 rural — compared with 94 total fatal crashes in 2025 and 83 in 2024, meaning this year's fatal crash count is trending down. Even so, Franklin County led all 88 Ohio counties in traffic enforcement contacts during the 2025-2026 New Year's holiday period, logging 464 stops for violations including impaired driving, speeding, and seat belt infractions, according to the Statehouse News Bureau. Public health assessments compiled by central Ohio hospital systems have found that accidental injuries, including motor vehicle collisions, remain the leading cause of death among adults ages 18 to 59 in Franklin County.
As of Thursday, the identity of the deceased driver had not been released, and it remains unclear whether toxicology results or criminal charges will follow once the Crash Investigation Unit determines which vehicle crossed the center line. The Cadillac driver's condition had not changed from critical as of the sheriff's office's latest update.
