Heather Anne Lomax will headline her debut Las Vegas show Friday night, taking the stage at The Space to release her new album, Who Do You Think You Are, in front of a hometown crowd for the first time since relocating from Los Angeles. Who Do You Think You Are will be released via Blackbird Record Label, and the record itself carries some serious pedigree behind the scenes. The album was recorded live at Love Street Sound Studios in Los Angeles and produced by Zachary Ross, with mixing by Jason Hiller and mastering by Maor Appelbaum, according to details published by Blackbird Record Label. Recording live rather than piecing tracks together in isolation helped capture the raw, classic rock-and-roll energy that defines the project.
The sessions also drew on an array of veteran studio and touring musicians. Drummers Rob Humphries, who has played with Kacey Musgraves and Leonard Cohen, and David Goodstein, known for his work with Jackson Browne and Dolly Parton, both appear on the record, alongside keyboardists Ty Bailie, who has performed with Katy Perry, and Carey Frank, who has worked with Bruce Springsteen. Flutist Fuzzbee Morse, whose credits include Bono and Peter Gabriel, rounds out the lineup, per the same label materials.
A Tribute Woven Into the Tracklist
Most of the songs on Who Do You Think You Are are Lomax originals, but the album includes one cover: “Superstar,” written by her late friend Michael Doman, former frontman of the 1980s Los Angeles band Broken Homes. That single track connects the new release to Lomax's history with Doman, whom she collaborated with for two years before his death from a brain ailment in December 2020. Their partnership previously produced The Doman Tracks, an eight-song collection Lomax released via Blackbird Record Label in November 2023, as reported by Broadway World.
Lomax has performed under her birth name for years now, but she spent an earlier stretch of her career recording as Michael-Ann before reclaiming Heather Anne Lomax after uncovering a family lineage of artists connected to renowned American ethnomusicologist Alan Lomax, according to Americana Highways. The rebranding reflects both a personal reckoning and a nod to a broader family history in American music.
Singles Set the Stage for Friday's Release
Lomax built anticipation for the album with two lead singles, releasing “Come Along” in June and “Step Aside” in July, the latter paired with a music video showcasing the record's guitar-driven, blues-rock sound. Those releases gave fans an early taste of the album ahead of its full arrival alongside Friday's concert.
Inside The Space, an Off-Strip Community Fixture
The venue hosting Lomax's debut headline turn has its own local backstory. The Space, located off the Las Vegas Strip at 3460 Cavaretta Court, opened in 2017 after former Rock of Ages actor Mark Shunock converted a 3,000-square-foot warehouse and former boxing gym previously owned by rapper 50 Cent into an off-Strip black-box theater, according to Las Vegas Weekly. The venue has since become a fixture of the city's independent arts scene rather than a Strip tourist stop.
The Space also serves as the primary hub for Mondays Dark, a bi-monthly charity variety show Shunock founded in 2013 that has raised more than $1.8 million for over 180 Las Vegas-area nonprofit organizations, per Las Vegas Weekly's reporting. That community track record adds weight to the venue's role as the site of Lomax's first Las Vegas headline show.
An Indie Label Rooted in Americana
Blackbird Record Label, which is releasing Who Do You Think You Are, is a Los Angeles-based independent imprint founded in 2017 by recording artist Manda Mosher and music supervisor Eric Craig to champion Americana, alt-country, and roots-rock music, according to BeachChatter. The label's genre focus lines up closely with the sound Lomax has built over more than two decades on stage, and its backing places Friday's release within a broader network of independent roots-music artists based out of Los Angeles.
