Foothill High School's Falcon Marching Band just landed one of the biggest honors in high school music: a spot in the 2027 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City. The Clark County School District announced the news Friday, saying the Henderson students were excited to learn they had been chosen for the national broadcast.

The announcement, posted by CCSD on social media, comes as the district continues to operate more than 370 schools and serve over 300,000 students across Southern Nevada. This isn't Foothill's first trip to Macy's, though — the Falcon Marching Band previously performed in the 88th Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade back in November 2014, according to the Las Vegas Sun, meaning the 2027 selection marks a repeat national honor rather than a first-time milestone for the school's music program. That earlier broadcast drew an average television audience of more than 22 million viewers, per the same report.

A Second National Parade Adds to an Already Busy Year

The Macy's selection isn't even the only major showcase on Foothill's 2027 calendar. In March, the Pasadena Tournament of Roses announced that the Falcon Marching Band had also been selected to perform in the 138th Rose Parade on January 1, 2027, according to a Tournament of Roses announcement shared on Facebook. That lineup is set to include international groups from Japan and Mexico, giving Foothill an unusually intense year of back-to-back national performances.

Foothill made history in January 2017 when it became the first ensemble from the Clark County School District to perform in the Rose Parade, according to Foothill High School Bands. The band's music program dates back to 1999, when it launched with just 29 members — a far cry from where it stands today.

The Largest Marching Band in Nevada

The Foothill Marching Band has grown into the largest high school marching band in the state, surpassing even the university marching bands at UNLV and UNR, according to the Foothill Falcon Band Boosters. The program reported 17% growth in 2024, reaching 207 student members, and now encompasses four concert bands, jazz ensembles, color guard, and an indoor drumline that has been a seven-time finalist at the WGI World Championships.

Leading the program since 2002 is Director of Bands Travis Pardee, who also serves as an adjunct faculty member in music education at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, per UNLV. Pardee earned his Master of Music degree from UNLV the same year he took over the Foothill program. Under his direction, the band has built a travel resume that extends well beyond the country's biggest parades, including a St. Patrick's Day Parade appearance in Dublin, Ireland in 2009, the National Memorial Day Parade in Washington D.C. in 2012, and D-Day anniversary ceremonies in Normandy, France.

The Fundraising Push Ahead

Selection for the Macy's parade doesn't happen overnight. The Macy's Parade Band Selection Committee chooses participating high school and university marching bands roughly 18 months in advance of the parade, following a competitive national application process based on awards, past performances, and community reputation, according to the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade Wiki.

That timeline means Foothill now faces a demanding stretch of preparation and fundraising before Thanksgiving 2027. When the band traveled to the 2014 Macy's Parade, the community raised more than $500,000 to cover roughly $2,500 per student in travel, lodging, and meal costs for the 300 students who made the trip, with local businesses and fundraising events helping sponsor student travel. A similar community effort is expected to be needed again, this time to support two national trips within the same school year.

A Henderson Campus With a Track Record

Foothill High School sits at 800 College Drive in Henderson and enrolls approximately 2,855 students, with local academic proficiency scores of 76% in math and 81% in reading. The school has made headlines for reasons beyond its band program in recent years, including an unfounded bomb threat that triggered a secure status on campus in 2024 and a DUI awareness initiative held there last year.

Foothill isn't the only regional band making national headlines this parade season — Hoodline previously reported on the NAU Lumberjack band's own Macy's debut. For Foothill, though, the 2027 invitation adds to a legacy that began nearly three decades ago and now includes two of the most prestigious parade stages in the country in the same calendar year.
