Seattle Fire had dispatched a scenes-of-violence response to SODO, but the victim had already been driven away before authorities arrived.
Friend Describes a Drive-By at High Point Commons Park
According to West Seattle Blog, a friend of the victim said the incident was a drive-by shooting at High Point Commons Park. The outlet reports that the victim's friends stopped in SODO, on the other side of the eastbound bridge connecting High Point and the industrial district, after the shooting. Police are still investigating the report that a person was shot in High Point, per the same account.
The route described — friends driving a wounded person away from the scene rather than waiting for an ambulance — lines up with a standing Seattle Fire Department policy. Under that rule, emergency medical crews dispatched to calls flagged as “scenes of violence” must stage outside the area and wait for Seattle Police Department officers to confirm it's safe before going in to render aid, according to the City of Seattle. That protocol often prompts bystanders or companions to transport the injured themselves rather than wait, which appears to be what happened here.
A Park With a Painful Recent History
High Point Commons Park carries weight beyond this single report. In December 2024, a 15-year-old student was shot and killed on a residential street next to the park after neighbors reported hearing screaming and gunfire late at night, as reported by KIRO 7. That case adds grim context to any new report of gunfire tied to the same location, though it is not known whether the two incidents are connected.
Gun violence in High Point has continued into this year. Hoodline reported in March that police recovered shell casings after gunfire in an alley near High Point between 34th and 35th avenues SW, with a suspect seen fleeing the scene. Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson appointed Interim Police Chief Andre Sayles to lead the department in July, emphasizing that addressing youth gun violence and supporting the Gun Violence Reduction Unit are core priorities for the department going forward.
