A 53-year-old Hilo man was in critical condition Wednesday after being shot multiple times outside a Livingston subdivision residence, while police arrested a Mountain View resident suspected in the attack.
Officers responded to the shooting early Tuesday in the 18-1200 block of Waikiki Street, where they found the wounded man, according to Big Island Now. The victim was taken to Hilo Benioff Medical Center, and investigators identified 35-year-old Kawika Ah Nee as the suspect.
Police said Ah Nee fled in a pickup truck before officers arrived, but he was later found on foot near Kauaʻi Street at about 4:27 a.m. and taken into custody without incident. Detectives also secured a residence there while seeking a search warrant, as the Area I Criminal Investigation Section continued working the case.
Another Mountain View Gun Case This Year
The arrest follows a separate firearms investigation in Mountain View on May 21, when police said a man fled after officers received reports that he was experiencing suicidal and homicidal thoughts while possessing multiple firearms. The Hawaiʻi Police Department later said officers recovered loaded guns, ammunition and a ballistic vest; a Mountain View firearms scare report covered that earlier case. Police have not indicated any connection between the two incidents.
Detectives Ask For Witnesses
Ah Nee was booked at the East Hawaiʻi Detention Facility on suspicion of attempted murder, while the shooting investigation remains active, the initial report said. Authorities have not released a motive, described any relationship between the men or announced formal criminal charges.
