A morning drive on Houston’s Westpark Drive ended in a deadly pole crash Sunday, after police said the vehicle was moving at more than 100 mph. The driver did not survive, and the early account left investigators with more questions than answers about what sent the car off the roadway.
According to ABC13 Houston, a caller reported the wreck just before 7 a.m. in the 10000 block of Westpark Drive near Wilcrest and said they could not get the driver out of the vehicle. Houston police said the driver was pronounced dead at the scene, and no one else was reported injured.
Westpark Crash Leaves Roadway Questions Behind
A separate July 8 crash in north Houston shows the kind of questions that can follow a high-speed pole impact. KPRC 2 reported that investigators in that case were examining speed, alcohol and possible racing, though authorities have not connected that incident to Sunday’s crash.
Westpark Drive has also seen another fatal crash in recent weeks. In a June 22 release, the Houston Police Department said a motorcycle operator died after striking a Jeep on Westpark near Woodchase Drive on June 19, while a Jeep passenger was taken to a hospital.
For Sunday’s scene, ABC13 said Westpark Drive had reopened by 9:30 a.m., while workers remained nearby and standing water was visible. The station said it was asking city officials whether the crash caused a water-main break, but that possibility had not been confirmed in the initial report.
