Rocambolesc is no longer scooping gelato in Houston, ending a four-plus-year run that paired luxury dessert with a very deliberate mission: putting neurodivergent Houstonians on the job. The Uptown Park shop’s closing leaves behind a business that struggled financially, but a disability-inclusion project that grew well beyond its original counter.

The company said in an Instagram announcement that its Uptown Park lease had ended and its partnership with the Roca brothers of Spain’s El Celler de Can Roca had concluded. As the Houston Chronicle reported, the Houston outpost opened in 2022 as the brand’s only U.S. location.

Rocambolesc’s Employment Mission Outlived The Storefront

Rocambolesc was not built as a standard dessert outpost. On its official about page, the company described itself as a public benefit corporation created to provide people with intellectual and developmental disabilities opportunities to grow through employment, with Houston’s Center for Pursuit as a partner.

That work now has a wider local footprint. The Genuine Cup’s official site says its Houston 2026 tournament wrapped Saturday after bringing more than 1,000 athletes with intellectual disabilities and autism together for competition, connection and community.

The Houston Chronicle reported that Rocambolesc opened with five neurodiverse employees and later helped inspire the Genuine Foundation and its Genuine Cup soccer tournament. In its closure message, the shop said the business did not succeed financially, but its inclusion mission did.

For Uptown Park, the shuttered storefront is another restaurant vacancy in a city where even distinctive concepts can struggle to stay open. For Houston’s disability community, the bigger question is whether the jobs-and-independence model can keep expanding after its original showcase closes; Rocambolesc is gone, but the organizations it helped spark are still moving.
