Houston, We Have a Heat Problem: NWS Puts City Under 109-Degree Advisory

Houston is starting Tuesday clear, steamy and already around 80 degrees, with the afternoon forecast heading toward a near-100-degree high. The bigger concern is how it feels outside: humidity could push the heat index to 109, making outdoor plans a sweaty—and potentially risky—proposition.

The National Weather Service Houston/Galveston office has a Heat Advisory in effect through 7 p.m. Tuesday, covering Houston and much of the surrounding region. The National Weather Service says hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat-related illnesses.

Triple-Digit Heat Holds Through Wednesday

Tuesday will be mostly sunny with light southwest winds, while Wednesday looks nearly as hot with a high near 99 and a heat index as high as 106. The inland Houston area will run much warmer than the coast, where Galveston is expected to stay in the low 90s.

Rain Chances Finally Start To Return

The forecast stays mostly dry through Wednesday, but a slight chance of afternoon showers and thunderstorms arrives Thursday. Rain chances rise to 40% Thursday night and Friday, when highs should ease to about 94 degrees, followed by weekend highs in the low to mid-90s and only spotty storm chances.

Take The Heat Advisory Seriously

Drink plenty of fluids, use air conditioning when possible and avoid strenuous outdoor work during the hottest part of the day. The weather service also recommends frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas and checking on relatives and neighbors who may be especially vulnerable to the heat.
