Flames ripped across the roof of a three-story apartment building in Southeast D.C. Tuesday afternoon, sending a towering plume of thick black smoke over the neighborhood. The blaze was intense enough to threaten nearby buildings as firefighters worked to contain it.
The fire broke out in the 5300 block of E Street SE, according to WJLA. Smoke was visible from the Navy Yard neighborhood, giving residents miles away an early warning that something serious was unfolding in Southeast.
Flames Showed From The Roof
D.C. Fire and EMS said flames were showing from the building’s roof, while reports indicated the fire had reached other nearby structures. Video from the scene showed smoke billowing high into the sky as crews battled the apartment-building blaze.
Officials had not said by Tuesday afternoon what started the fire, and additional details about possible injuries, evacuations or damage were not immediately available. The incident remained under investigation as firefighters continued working at the scene.
