Jacksonville is heading into a wet, windy Sunday, with showers and thunderstorms expected to build from late morning through the afternoon. The forecast calls for a high near 89 degrees, a heat index as high as 100, and a quick drop toward the mid-80s as storms move through.
Storms Build Through The Afternoon
Showers could arrive before 11 a.m., followed by increasing thunderstorm chances around midday and into the afternoon. Southwest winds will run 9 to 16 mph, with gusts up to 24 mph, while rainfall totals of roughly a quarter to half an inch are possible.
The biggest flooding concern is west of the Interstate 75 corridor, where the National Weather Service Jacksonville office says slow-moving or repeating storms could produce heavier totals. Low-lying roads, urban areas and places with poor drainage around northeast Florida can still see temporary ponding during the strongest downpours.
Isolated strong to severe storms could bring damaging wind gusts of 40 to 60 mph, according to the National Weather Service Jacksonville office. Beachgoers should also note a moderate rip current risk along northeast Florida beaches, while boaters face a small craft advisory from Sunday afternoon into Monday morning.
Storm Chances Stay Elevated Into Tuesday
Tonight will remain mostly cloudy with a chance of showers and thunderstorms and a low around 76. Monday brings another 80% chance of storms with a high near 90, followed by a hot Tuesday near 92 with a 70% chance of showers and thunderstorms.
Storm chances ease somewhat from Wednesday through Saturday, but temperatures remain in the low 90s with afternoon storms still possible each day. For outdoor plans, keep activities flexible, secure loose items before winds increase and head indoors as soon as thunder is heard.
