A Jeffersonville woman accused of driving 60 mph through a 35-mph zone before a head-on crash that killed an Indiana truck driver pleaded not guilty Tuesday. The case now moves from a fatal June collision into a felony prosecution involving three injured children who were riding in her vehicle.
Mary May, 29, appeared in court and pleaded not guilty to reckless homicide, reckless driving, wanton endangerment and assault, according to WDRB. Her bond was set at $175,000, and she is due back in court next Tuesday.
The crash happened just before 10 a.m. June 16 on U.S. 421 in Trimble County, Kentucky State Police said in an initial release. Investigators said May's red 2012 Volvo S60 crossed the center line and struck a black 1987 Ford Ranger driven by 39-year-old David Logan of Lawrenceburg, Indiana. Logan died at the scene, while May and three juvenile passengers were flown to Louisville hospitals with serious injuries.
Three Children Were In The Car
The children were ages 5, 4 and 4, according to court documents cited by WDRB. The two 4-year-olds were later released from the hospital, while the conditions of May and the 5-year-old were not available in the report.
Reckless Homicide Is A Class D Felony
Kentucky law defines reckless homicide as causing another person's death with recklessness and classifies it as a Class D felony, according to the Kentucky Revised Statutes. The statute describes the offense, but it does not establish that May committed it; she has pleaded not guilty and remains presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
Kentucky State Police said the collision remains under investigation and is being reconstructed by Trooper Jordan Votaw. The next hearing is expected to address the case's continuing court process.
