Kapolei Mall Robbery, Suspect Flashed Handgun Handle Before Fleeing on Foot

A 22-year-old man was pushed, kicked and robbed late Monday night in a Kapolei mall parking lot after a stranger approached him, displayed the handle of a black handgun and made off with his belongings on foot. Police say the confrontation unfolded around 11:40 p.m. on August 24, and while the victim was not injured, the case has been opened as a robbery investigation that remains active.

According to Hawaii News Now, the suspect physically assaulted the victim before taking his personal property and running from the scene. Police describe the man as roughly 5 feet 7 inches tall and about 160 pounds, wearing a black tank top and black shorts and carrying a black fanny pack. The Honolulu Police Department has asked anyone with information to call 911 or, for anonymous tips, CrimeStoppers at 808-955-8300, which offers cash rewards of up to $1,000 for information leading to an arrest or identification in felony cases, per CrimeStoppers Honolulu.

A Wide Patrol Area Under Pressure

The robbery falls under the jurisdiction of HPD's District 8, which operates out of the Kapolei Police Station at 1100 Kamokila Boulevard and covers a sprawling stretch of West Oahu that includes Kapolei, Ewa, Ewa Beach, Makakilo, Campbell Industrial Park and the Waianae Coast, according to the Honolulu Police Department. It is one of the largest geographic patrol areas on the island, and police union representatives told Honolulu Civil Beat in July 2024 that District 8 shifts covering that entire span from Ewa to Kaena Point frequently run below fully authorized staffing levels, stretching officers thin during high call volumes.

That same Civil Beat analysis found that homicides and non-negligent manslaughters on Oahu climbed 82% over the five years from 2019 to 2024, with District 8 driving much of that increase in violent crime. The city has been investing in investigative capacity in the district, too — the Office of the Mayor announced in June 2025 that Honolulu awarded a contract to complete dedicated investigative work areas at the Waianae Substation, expanding interview space for District 8 detectives based out of Kapolei.

Commercial Corridor Has Seen Trouble Before

The parking lot where Monday's robbery happened sits in the heart of Kapolei's retail core, home to the 500,000-square-foot Kapolei Commons and the nearby Ka Makana Ali'i center, both of which draw heavy shopper traffic into large open-air lots. It is not the first time a Kapolei commercial parking area has turned violent after dark. In February, Honolulu police investigated a shooting outside a Kapolei Taco Bell that left two mainland visitors injured inside a parked rental vehicle.

Depending on how prosecutors evaluate the handgun handle the suspect displayed, the case could be charged as either Robbery in the First Degree, a Class A felony carrying up to 20 years in prison under Hawaii law, or Robbery in the Second Degree, a Class B felony carrying up to 10 years, according to Justia Law. The distinction turns on whether the weapon qualifies as a dangerous instrument under the statute, a determination that remains with investigators and prosecutors as the case develops.

Property Crime Backdrop in Hawaii

Hawaii's statewide property crime rate stood at 1,946.8 incidents per 100,000 residents as of 2024, about 10.6% above the national average, per FBI Uniform Crime Reporting data compiled by USAFacts. West Oahu residents have increasingly turned to crowdsourced tools alongside official police channels; the grassroots network Stolen Stuff Hawaii, founded in 2014, has grown to more than 132,000 vetted members across Oahu who post surveillance footage and suspect details to help identify perpetrators, as Honolulu Civil Beat has reported.

It remains unclear whether HPD detectives have recovered surveillance footage from nearby mall businesses or received any tips through CrimeStoppers or community networks since the robbery. The investigation is ongoing, and police continue to seek information from anyone who may have witnessed the confrontation or has details about the suspect's identity.
