A surprise alligator turned a routine day at a Kissimmee high school into a full-on wildlife response Friday, after the reptile wandered into the campus baseball bullpen while football practice was underway nearby. Deputies moved in before the unexpected visitor could create a bigger problem for students, staff, or athletes.
According to West Orlando News, a school resource officer reported the alligator at Tohopekaliga High School, where Community Services Sergeant Drew and other Osceola County deputies captured it. The animal was relocated to a suitable habitat, and school activities resumed without incident.
The gator was found in the baseball bullpen, an especially awkward location with the football team practicing close by. Officials did not report any injuries, and there was no indication that the school needed to shut down or cancel athletic activity.
What To Do If A Gator Shows Up
Florida alligators can turn up near ponds, lakes, canals, retention areas, and other freshwater habitats, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. The agency advises people to keep their distance, never feed or approach an alligator, and call the Nuisance Alligator Hotline at 866-FWC-GATOR if the animal poses a threat.
For an immediate danger to life or safety, local officials say residents should call 911. Non-emergency alligator sightings in Osceola County can be reported to the Sheriff's Office at 407-348-2222 or Animal Services at 407-742-8000 rather than attempting a backyard-style capture.
This was not the first time an Osceola school property has attracted a scaly intruder. WFTV reported in March that Sergeant Drew captured a roughly 6.5-foot alligator near BridgePrep Academy in Poinciana, while Hoodline previously covered a separate gator removal outside Bellalago Academy in Kissimmee.
