What began as a crash investigation in Lake Worth Beach allegedly turned into an assault on firefighters, an emergency-room confrontation and a second wreck involving a stolen pickup. Cesar James, 35, now faces charges tied to both incidents, according to authorities.
According to CBS12, citing the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded Saturday to a crashed black pickup in Lake Worth Beach. James was identified as the driver and was reportedly operating the vehicle with a revoked license while deputies investigated possible DUI. He allegedly became verbally aggressive with Palm Beach County Fire Rescue personnel, tried to punch firefighters and later continued the confrontation at JFK Medical Center, where he allegedly attempted to strike a deputy before being subdued and arrested.
Florida Law Treats Battery On A Firefighter As A Felony
Florida law reclassifies battery against a firefighter performing official duties from a first-degree misdemeanor to a third-degree felony, according to the Florida Senate. That statute applies to the legal classification of the alleged offense; it does not determine whether James is guilty.
Second Crash Allegedly Involved A Stolen Pickup
The following day, deputies responded to another crash at Sixth Avenue South and South Dixie Highway in Boynton Beach, where a black pickup had struck a streetlamp. CBS12 reported that PBSO identified James as the driver and said the truck had been stolen from a Boynton Beach residence before the wreck. The reported charges include battery on a firefighter, grand theft of a motor vehicle, corruptly threatening a public servant, intent to threaten violence, driving-related counts involving a revoked license and operating a vehicle with a revoked license; the allegations have not been proven in court.
