A 29-year-old Lakeland man is facing a felony charge after deputies say he grabbed a pregnant woman by the neck and shoved her to the ground before running from the scene late Sunday night. Marquel D'es Watson was arrested following a K9 and air search that ended just blocks from where the alleged attack happened.
According to Tampa Free Press, Polk County Sheriff's Office deputies responded around 10 p.m. on August 30 to the area of East Main Street and Idaho Avenue in Lakeland on a battery complaint. Watson reportedly fled the area on foot after the alleged assault, prompting a search involving a K9 unit and the sheriff's Air Unit. The Polk County Sheriff announced the arrest on social media Monday, describing the case as beginning with a battery complaint in that same East Main Street area.
K9 Tracks Suspect to Nearby Street
The search ended when a police K9 team located Watson hiding on Magnolia Street East in Lakeland, not far from where the confrontation reportedly began, per the same account. He was taken into custody without further incident and transported to the Polk County Sheriff's Processing Center for booking.
Watson was charged with aggravated battery on a pregnant victim, a second-degree felony, along with violation of probation tied to driving with a suspended or revoked license. Deputies allege Watson pushed the pregnant woman to the floor during the encounter, though the exact nature of the relationship between Watson and the victim, and her condition following the incident, has not been detailed in available reports.
Prior Record Includes Theft, Drug and Resisting Charges
The sheriff's office noted Watson's criminal history includes robbery, burglary, grand theft, fleeing to elude, and aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer. The station's report also lists prior charges for dealing in stolen property, trespassing, giving false statements to law enforcement, and resisting arrest both with and without violence, expanding on the pattern of prior run-ins with Florida authorities.
Tampa Free Press further reports that Watson's background includes past drug charges involving cocaine, methamphetamine, MDMA, mushrooms, marijuana, and other controlled substances.
