Honolulu is waking Sunday to breezy conditions, tropical-storm-force weather potential and a serious flood threat as Tropical Storm Lala tracks westward south of Oahu. The temperature was around 78 degrees before dawn, but the bigger story is what is falling from the sky: heavy showers, thunderstorms and potentially dangerous runoff. Forecasters expect a high near 85 degrees, with rain likely through the day.
Heavy Rain And Gusty Winds Move Over Oahu
As of early Sunday, the National Weather Service in Honolulu said Lala was about 80 miles south of Honolulu, carrying maximum winds of 70 mph and moving northwest at about 14 mph. A Tropical Storm Warning covers Honolulu, Kaimuki and Salt Lake, with peak local winds forecast at 25 to 35 mph and gusts reaching 55 mph, according to the National Weather Service.
Sunday’s forecast calls for a 100% chance of precipitation, with one to two inches of rain possible and locally higher totals. The Flood Watch remains in effect through tonight for Oahu, where low-lying roads, underpasses, drainage trouble spots and streams could quickly become hazardous.
Surf And Travel Conditions Could Turn Dangerous
East-facing shores are also dealing with elevated surf, beach erosion and possible overwash along vulnerable coastal areas. The storm’s strongest impacts may occur away from its center, especially near mountains and downslope locations where winds can accelerate unexpectedly.
Residents should stay indoors, keep away from windows and avoid driving through moving water or flooded roads. With the possibility of power outages and fallen trees, the National Weather Service advises keeping phones charged and having flashlights, batteries and other emergency supplies ready.
Conditions Improve After Monday
Showers should become more scattered Sunday night, with a low near 79 degrees, before Monday brings partly sunny skies, a high near 86 and a 30% chance of rain. Winds will gradually ease as Lala moves west, and Tuesday through the end of the workweek should turn drier with moderate trade winds, highs from 86 to 88 degrees and only isolated showers.
