San Antonio families have one final weekend to catch Wonder Theatre’s full-scale production of Matilda: The Musical, a locally staged spin on Roald Dahl’s story about a bookish girl with a remarkable mind and a serious grudge against bad adults. The show closes Sunday at Wonderland of the Americas after a summer run packed with big songs, young performers and at least one very unpleasant headmistress.
The remaining performances are scheduled for Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 3 p.m., with a special 2 p.m. show on Saturday. The Wonder Theatre production page lists Alonzo Corona as director and choreographer, with the cast performing numbers including “When I Grow Up,” “Naughty,” “Revolting Children” and “School Song.”
The production leans into the story’s darker edges instead of sanding them down into pure storybook sweetness. In a sponsored preview, the San Antonio Current described Corona’s approach as having a Tim Burton-like tone, while emphasizing the show’s central theme of chosen family and the idea that even young people can make a difference.
Wonder Theatre Offers A Mall-Based Family Outing
Wonder Theatre is located inside Wonderland of the Americas, where free parking is available throughout the mall’s entrances. The venue’s visitor information also notes that the intimate theater has 234 seats, assigned seating and wheelchair-accessible spaces.
According to the Current preview, adult tickets cost $35, while seniors, military members and first responders pay $30; teacher tickets are $22 and student tickets are $20. Wonder Theatre Academy’s youth production, Matilda JR., runs through Thursday with two San Antonio-area casts and $15 tickets, giving families one more chance to see the story before this particular Matilda season disappears into the chalkboard dust.
