A 17-year-old is accused of fatally stabbing his mother and critically wounding his father inside their League City home, then briefly barricading himself inside before officers pulled him out and placed him under arrest. Responding officers found the man and woman suffering from multiple stab wounds inside a house in the Oaks of Clear Creek neighborhood, according to League City police.
Emergency responders arrived at the Deer Ridge Lane home around 7:11 p.m. Thursday after receiving a call about a man lying on the lawn, according to KHOU. Neighbors had already pulled the woman outside and were performing CPR on her before police arrived, the station reported. Both the man and woman were taken to a hospital, where the mother was pronounced dead; the father remains in critical condition, according to FOX 26 Houston.
Suspect Barricaded Himself Before Arrest
The suspect, identified by police as the couple's son, briefly barricaded himself inside the residence before officers safely removed him and took him into custody, per the same KHOU report. Authorities have not released his name. Officials have also not confirmed which parent was determined to have been killed and which one survived, and they say they do not yet know the circumstances that led up to the stabbing.
Because the suspect is 17, he will be prosecuted as an adult. Texas law defines anyone 17 or older as a legal adult for criminal prosecution purposes, meaning the case bypasses juvenile court and any certification hearing, according to the Texas District & County Attorneys Association. If charged with murder, he would face a first-degree felony carrying a punishment range of 5 to 99 years or life in state prison under Texas Penal Code § 19.02, according to a legal explainer from Saputo Toufexis.
Not the First Fatal Family Stabbing in League City
This is not the first time League City has seen a fatal stabbing involving a family member. In June 2023, a 29-year-old man was arrested and charged with murder after stabbing his father to death inside a home on West Marina Bay Drive, as reported by Click2Houston. And in January 2025, the League City Police Department arrested a 41-year-old suspect on murder charges following a fatal stabbing in the 2800 block of Brookmist Lane.
Despite those cases, League City remains a statistically safe suburb. The city recorded just four murders and 121 violent crimes in 2024, for a violent crime rate roughly 71% below the national average, according to data compiled by OpenCrime. Statewide, Texas violent crime fell 5.4% year-over-year as of a March 2026 report, driven in part by a 16.9% drop in murder and nonnegligent manslaughter, per an analysis from Greco Neyland, PC.
The suburb has drawn national attention for its low crime and affordability; Hoodline reported in June 2025 that League City ranked among the top four safest mid-sized cities in the country. Local trauma care has also been expanding, with UT Regents approving a $300 million expansion of UTMB League City Hospital in February that includes a new 40-bed emergency department, a project Hoodline covered earlier this year.
Formal charges against the suspect have not yet been announced, and the Galveston County District Attorney's Office has not released further details on the case. The father's condition and the exact sequence of events inside the home remain unclear as the investigation continues.
