A 35-year-old Līhuʻe woman died after she was pulled from the water below Kauaʻi’s Nīnini Point Lighthouse Saturday, turning a rescue call into a fatal investigation. Police say there is no evidence of foul play, but an autopsy is still pending to determine what caused her death.
Coast Guard Pulled Millie Mallon From Water
Bystanders reported an unresponsive person floating in the water at about 3:30 p.m., according to a release from the Kauaʻi Police Department. U.S. Coast Guard personnel brought the woman to shore, where Kauaʻi Fire Department crews attempted lifesaving measures before medics transported her to Wilcox Medical Center.
The woman was pronounced dead at the hospital, and police later identified her as Millie Mallon, 35, of Līhuʻe. The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported the identification Monday as the investigation remained open.
Autopsy Pending As Police Seek Witnesses
An autopsy is expected to determine Mallon’s official cause of death and whether any contributing factors were involved, according to the police release. Authorities said there was no evidence of foul play at this time, and they have not publicly explained what happened before Mallon was found in the water.
