Thieves moved through four Mahopac streets before sunrise last Wednesday, slipping into seven unlocked vehicles between 3:37 a.m. and 5:05 a.m. Carmel Police have not said what, if anything, was taken from the cars, and no suspects have been publicly identified.
The Town of Carmel Police Department announced the incidents on Friday, saying the break-ins happened in the Lake Casse, Lake Drive, and Ridge Road neighborhoods, according to Daily Voice. Every vehicle involved had been left unlocked, and police urged residents to lock their cars whenever they are left unattended. Officers also asked anyone with information, photos, or video related to the incidents to come forward.
Per the same report, police did not disclose whether investigators have identified any suspects in the case. Carmel Police also urged residents to remove valuables such as backpacks, purses, electronics, firearms, and spare keys from their vehicles rather than leave them inside overnight.
Thieves Struck Hours After a Community Safety Event
The break-ins came just hours after the Carmel Police Department hosted its annual National Night Out at Airport Park in Mahopac, an event held nationwide on the first Tuesday of August to promote crime prevention and police-community partnerships, as reported by Mid Hudson News. Separately, Halston Media News reported that Carmel Police warned residents the thieves appeared to be moving quickly through residential streets specifically searching for unlocked vehicles.
The targeted Lake Casse neighborhood is a close-knit residential community built around a 35-acre lake, with its own private park district, community beach, and Fulmar Road Elementary School, according to Nancy Kennedy Team Real Estate. It's the kind of quiet, family-oriented pocket of Mahopac where an overnight crime spree tends to rattle residents even when no one is hurt.
A Recurring Pattern Across Putnam County
This is not an isolated incident for the region. In June, law enforcement agencies across Putnam County issued a regional stolen car and break-in alert following overnight thefts in neighboring communities, with Sheriff Brian Hess noting that quick nightly lock checks significantly reduce auto crime, per Mid Hudson News. And in March, the Putnam County Sheriff's Office, New York State Police, and the Westchester/Putnam Real-Time Crime Center ran a three-day joint enforcement initiative using license plate reader technology to target auto thefts, an effort that resulted in multiple arrests across Carmel and neighboring towns, according to the Putnam County Sheriff's Office.
What gets taken from an unlocked car can matter a great deal legally. Under New York Penal Law Section 155.25, taking property valued under $1,000 from an unlocked vehicle is charged as petit larceny, a Class A misdemeanor, but the same law automatically elevates the theft of credit cards or firearms to grand larceny in the fourth degree, a Class E felony, regardless of the item's dollar value, per NYS Open Legislation.
Department Has Touted Town's Safety Record
Chief Anthony Hoffmann, who has led the Town of Carmel Police Department since January 2021 after a 22-year law enforcement career according to Daily Voice, oversees a department headquartered at 60 McAlpin Avenue in Mahopac. The department covers a 40-square-mile jurisdiction serving roughly 34,000 residents with an authorized strength of 36 police officers and five civilian dispatchers, according to Putnam County Press.
That same report noted the Town of Carmel was recognized in national safety studies as the second safest town in New York State and eighth safest in the country, with the department handling more than 33,000 calls for service in 2023. The town has also continued investing in local policing resources, with the Carmel Town Board approving a $15,000 watercraft addition for Lake Mahopac patrol in July to boost emergency response capabilities, per Mid Hudson News.
