Mahwah Fisherman, 62, Dies After Collapsing Into Darlington Park Lake

A 62-year-old man who was a familiar presence at Darlington County Park died Friday after he appeared to suffer a medical episode and fell into the park's fishing lake in Mahwah at around 10 a.m. He was later pronounced dead at a hospital.

The man, described as an avid fisherman who frequented the park, was reported to have appeared to suffer a medical episode before falling into the water, according to witness accounts cited by Daily Voice. He was later pronounced dead at The Valley Hospital.

Bergen County spokesperson Derek Sands described the man as a regular patron who fished there frequently, the outlet reported.

Why the Fishing Lake Is Different From the Swim Areas

Darlington County Park, spread across roughly 127 to 178 acres at 600 Darlington Avenue at the foothills of the Ramapo Mountains, contains three separate lakes — two set aside for swimming and a third for fishing, according to Bergen County government records. The fishing lake is described separately from the lifeguard-monitored swim lakes nearby.

The fishing lake is identified separately from the designated swim lakes. Per the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, freshwater fishing in the lake is strictly catch-and-release, and the agency provides the applicable state licensing requirements.

For the 2026 summer season, the park operated daily from roughly 8 or 9 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., with swimming hours at the designated swim lakes beginning at 10 a.m., according to the Bergen County Parks Department. Friday's incident occurred at approximately that same hour, placing it at the start of the park's swimming hours.

A County Park System With a History of Water Safety Concerns

Darlington County Park falls under the broader Bergen County Parks System, which includes 21 parks, six golf courses, two horseback riding areas, and a zoo. The park's swimming lakes have faced temporary closures in recent summers, including a public health advisory tied to harmful algal blooms in August 2025, as reported by Patch.

Friday's incident underscores the importance of water safety at the county's lakes for officials and visitors alike.

Emergency Response Relied on Coordinated County and Local Agencies

The man was taken to The Valley Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
