A man was shot to death Monday morning in an alley near the 200 block of Betz Road on Columbus' Far South Side, and police say no suspects are currently in custody. Officers responded to reports of gunfire in the residential neighborhood shortly before 11 a.m. and found the victim in the alley, according to police dispatchers.
The victim was pronounced dead at the scene at 11:04 a.m., just minutes after officers arrived, according to 10TV. Detectives with the Columbus Division of Police Homicide Unit took over the crime scene once the death was confirmed. A police dispatcher told the Columbus Dispatch that authorities have no information yet about what led up to the shooting.
Betz Road sits in the 43207 ZIP code, part of the city's Far South Side community planning area, which includes residential pockets bordering South High Street and Scioto Southland, per property records reviewed by Redfin. The Homicide Unit, housed within the department's Investigative Subdivision, handles death investigations across all 20 of the city's patrol precincts, according to background on the Columbus Division of Police, Ohio's largest municipal law enforcement agency.
Another South Side Case Still Open
This is not the only unsolved homicide in the area this summer. Just three weeks earlier, on July 18, Columbus police opened a homicide investigation after a man was found shot to death in the 2800 block of Lockbourne Road, also on the South Side, as Hoodline reported at the time. Lockbourne Road sits in the same South Side patrol area as Betz Road, underscoring a stretch of violence in the neighborhood this summer.

A Citywide Homicide Count Ticking Upward
The killing lands amid a year that had, until recently, been trending safer than 2025. Columbus recorded 84 total homicides last year, its lowest annual count in nearly two decades and a 31% drop from 2024, according to Axios, which reported that municipal officials credited expanded violence intervention programs and targeted police enforcement for the decline. A Major Cities Chiefs Association survey released in May found Columbus logged 12 homicides in the first quarter of 2026, down slightly from 13 during the same stretch in 2025, placing the city's early-year numbers in line with dozens of other major U.S. police departments surveyed.
But the trend shifted by late July. Columbus recorded its 50th homicide of the year, surpassing the 46 victims counted by the same date in 2025, according to WSYX ABC 6. Community advocacy groups had set a goal of keeping the annual homicide total under 100 for a second straight year, a target now facing renewed pressure as the count climbs.
Legal Stakes and How to Help
Under Ohio Revised Code Section 2903.02, a murder conviction in the state carries a mandatory indefinite prison sentence of 15 years to life, with up to three additional years possible if firearm specifications are proven in court. No arrests have been announced in the Betz Road case, and detectives have not released information about a suspect or motive.
