Baltimore police officers responded to a report of a shooting in the 1500 block of Russell Street on Wednesday, where they found an unidentified adult man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Medics rushed him to a local hospital for treatment, and homicide detectives were notified because of the severity of his condition, according to police.
The shooting, first reported by WBFF, unfolded just steps from M&T Bank Stadium, in a stretch of Russell Street anchored by a 24-hour Royal Farms gas station and Horseshoe Casino. Police have asked anyone with information about the shooting to come forward. A Block With a Troubled History
This is far from the first act of violence to hit this particular stretch of Russell Street. Just eight months ago, on December 10, 2025, 26-year-old Daequan Parker was shot and killed and a 22-year-old man was wounded outside the same Royal Farms gas station across from Horseshoe Casino, according to CBS News.
The block's violent history runs deeper still. In May 2024, 39-year-old Marcus Le'von Brown Sr. was fatally assaulted during a robbery outside the same Royal Farms, a case that led to first-degree murder charges handed down just last month, in July 2026. Surveillance footage and license plate readers from the adjacent casino corridor reportedly proved instrumental in helping prosecutors build that case.
Carjackings, Assaults and a Casino Garage Shooting
The pattern of violence extends beyond gunfire. On July 3, 2026, Baltimore police responded to an attempted carjacking and assault in the same block, in which a chain-wielding suspect attacked a taxi driver near Horseshoe Casino, as reported by WBFF. A September 2024 carjacking on the block was later tied by police to a 19-year-old suspect who was subsequently charged with first-degree murder in a separate shooting in Harbor East, according to the Baltimore Police Department.
Court records add another layer to the block's history. In February 2025, Baltimore City Circuit Court finalized sentencing for a defendant involved in an October 17, 2023 shooting outside the same Royal Farms store, a case that involved multiple co-defendants and a stolen vehicle that fled the scene after the gunfire, per Baltimore Witness. And back in March 2022, police investigated a shooting inside the Horseshoe Casino parking garage itself, where a 26-year-old victim was found with a gunshot wound and casino security assisted detectives with the investigation.
Falling Citywide Numbers, Persistent Local Hotspot
The 1500 block of Russell Street falls under the Baltimore Police Department's Southern District, based at 10 Cherry Hill Road, which also oversees public safety for Camden Yards and other South Baltimore landmarks. The tension between this block's repeated violence and the city's broader crime trends is notable: Baltimore recorded 50 homicides through July 1, 2026, a 23.1% drop from the 65 homicides logged during the same period in 2025, according to a statement from Mayor Brandon M. Scott's office, marking the lowest mid-year homicide total in the city's tracking history.
Non-fatal shootings citywide also ticked down, with 150 recorded in the first six months of 2026 compared to 165 during the same stretch of 2025, a 2.5% decrease, per Baltimore Police Department data. The department also reported a 54% clearance rate for non-fatal shootings as of July 1, 2026, up more than 12 percentage points from a year earlier, which it attributes to specialized investigative units and community tips. Even as those citywide figures trend downward, commercial corridors like this one, with late-night gas station traffic and a casino drawing crowds at all hours, continue to see repeated public safety incidents.
The identity and current condition of the man shot Wednesday had not been released as of publication. It also remains unknown whether his injuries will prove fatal, which is why homicide detectives, rather than a lower-level unit, were brought into the investigation from the outset.
