A crew of three or four masked men has been prowling Rogers Park and West Ridge before dawn, robbing people at gunpoint and speeding off in a black SUV or sedan, according to the Chicago Police Department. Officers say the group has struck at least four times since the middle of August, confronting victims on residential streets and at a gas station along the way.

The pattern began around 4:45 a.m. on August 13, when the crew allegedly robbed a woman on the street in the 1300 block of West Arthur Avenue, taking her valuables before fleeing, according to CWB Chicago. Two days later, the crew went on what police describe as a three-robbery run within about three hours, hitting different corners of the two neighborhoods in rapid succession.

That August 15 spree started around 3:34 a.m. in the 1700 block of West Chase Avenue, according to police. Around 5:50 a.m., the outlet reports the crew targeted an Uber driver at the Shell gas station at 6401 North Ridge Boulevard, making off with his wallet and other belongings before fleeing in a black Infiniti SUV. About 30 minutes later, police said, another person was robbed in the 7200 block of North California Avenue.

Police Describe Suspects and Getaway Vehicles

Investigators say the robbers have worn hoodies and numbered three or four masked men in each incident, confronting victims on the street at gunpoint before fleeing in either a black SUV or a black sedan. In one case, three armed men were reported to have fled in a dark-colored sedan. The Chicago Police Department formalized the warning to the public on August 21 by issuing Community Alert P26-3-026, a step the department reserves for pattern crimes that threaten public safety across multiple beats.

As part of the alert, CPD released surveillance images showing two of the robbery suspects, and the department is urging anyone with information to contact Area Three detectives at 312-744-8263. Tips can also be submitted anonymously at cpdtip.com. The Rogers Park and West Ridge cases fall within the 24th District, which covers the Far North Side lakefront communities bordering Evanston and overlaps the city's 49th and 50th wards. That district is led by Commander Alison T. Christian, a 29-year department veteran who previously served as captain and tactical lieutenant in the same district, according to the Chicago Police Department.

Legal Stakes if Suspects Are Caught

Armed robbery in Illinois is charged as a Class X felony under 720 ILCS 5/18-2, a non-probationable offense carrying a mandatory prison term of 6 to 30 years upon conviction, according to the Illinois General Assembly. If a firearm was used during the robbery, a separate statute, 720 ILCS 5/18-2(a)(2), adds a mandatory 15-year sentence enhancement on top of that base term, pushing the potential range to 21 to 45 years.

A Familiar Pattern on the North Side

This is not the first time Rogers Park has seen this kind of overnight robbery run. In June 2025, the neighborhood experienced a similar spree that began with a masked armed carjacking on Devon Avenue, followed by two more street robberies within an hour on Albion and Pratt avenues, according to CWB Chicago's earlier reporting. It is unclear whether Area Three detectives have connected this month's crew to that earlier case or to sprees in neighboring districts.

The spree comes even as broader crime data shows robbery numbers trending down across the North Side. Area Three recorded 466 robbery complaints through mid-June 2026, a 25% drop from the 620 robberies logged over the same span in 2025, per Chicago Police Department public safety reporting. A separate mid-year analysis from the Council on Criminal Justice found that Chicago's citywide robbery rate fell 28% in the first half of 2026 compared with the prior year, even as motor vehicle thefts rose 8% over the same period.

Rideshare Drivers Face Added Risk

The targeting of an Uber driver at the Shell station fits a broader safety concern that gig-worker advocates have raised for months. The Chicago Gig Alliance has pushed the Chicago City Council to require mandatory passenger identity verification, arguing that rideshare and taxi drivers are frequently targeted late at night at gas stations and pickup spots, according to The People's Lobby. Whether rideshare platforms or local ward offices plan any specific new safety measures for drivers working the 24th District's overnight hours remains an open question.
