McKinney is putting a shovel in the ground for a new kind of safety net: a 40,000-square-foot campus where nonprofits will share space and coordinate help for people across Collin County. The Collin County NeighborHub is designed to bring health care, food assistance, housing navigation and other services under one roof, with operations expected to begin in summer 2027.
Nonprofit officials and community leaders held the groundbreaking yesterday, marking the start of construction on the facility near Redbud Boulevard and White Avenue, according to Community Impact. Catholic Charities Dallas is leading the project as managing partner, and President and CEO David Woodyard said the hub is intended to provide free health care and other support to tens of thousands of people over time.
The project also represents a major expansion of Catholic Charities Dallas' regional service model. The organization says the new NeighborHUB will give North Texas families easier access to coordinated, wraparound support close to home, rather than sending them to a patchwork of disconnected offices.
McKinney Approvals Set The Ground Rules
The campus has been moving through city approvals for more than a year. McKinney city records show a July rezoning request expanded the proposal to about 2.09 acres, allowing a nonprofit and community service center along with modified development standards.
The project is not planned as an overnight shelter. Earlier zoning documents allowed offices, medical or dental clinics, food distribution, meeting space and indoor storage, creating a service center focused on helping residents facing housing instability during the day.
Seven Nonprofits Are Already Signed On
The founding partner roster includes Mission Regan, Neighbors Nourishing Neighbors, One Heart McKinney, Sanchez Charities, St. Vincent de Paul North Texas, Streetside Showers and The MedBridge, Community Impact reported. The facility can accommodate up to 18 nonprofits, leaving room for additional organizations to join the second floor.
The NeighborHub's own mission statement describes the project as a collaborative home for local nonprofits serving people in crisis. The goal is to combine advocacy, basic needs, health, hygiene, education and other services so residents can tell their story once and receive more coordinated support.
Public Investment Meets A Regional Need
The McKinney Community Development Corp. has invested about $1.7 million in the project, according to the McKinney Community Development Corporation. The agency has framed the NeighborHub as a quality-of-life investment intended to help families move from crisis toward stability.
That investment follows years of planning, zoning work and fundraising led by Sanchez Charities and Catholic Charities Dallas. MCDC minutes from April projected a summer 2027 opening, and yesterday's groundbreaking means the long-discussed campus has finally moved into its construction phase, with more than 12,000 people expected to be served in its first year and more than 28,600 by year five.
