The New York Mets are trying something new to fill seats during a rough season: matchmaking. On August 27, Citi Field will host the team's first-ever Singles Night Out, pairing a game against the Milwaukee Brewers with pregame mixers, relationship-status wristbands and conversation starters aimed at helping unattached fans meet a potential date, new friend or future game-day partner.

The event, first reported by Time Out New York, finds the Mets teaming up with Hot & Social, a New York-based social club built around solo attendance. Hot & Social requires guests to come alone and encourages them to actually talk to one another once they're there — a structure its founder, Liv Schreiber, built after struggling to find events where people could show up by themselves and meet new people. Schreiber, a former real estate broker, launched the company after experiencing what she described as adult loneliness following college, according to Net Influencer.

What began as solo dinners has since grown into a broader lineup of dating events, movie screenings, pickleball parties and Camp Social gatherings. Per the company's own account on its website, Hot & Social has built an online following of more than 300,000 people and says its gatherings have connected over 100,000 people, with waitlists at times swelling past 40,000 to 100,000 hopefuls for its in-person meetups.

Four Packages, One First Pitch

Fans looking to attend have four ticket tiers to choose from, ranging from $53 to $267, according to 710 WOR. Every package includes a game ticket and wristband, but the experiences scale up from there. The Bare Minimum package covers just game admission and a wristband, while the Ready to Mingle tier adds a pregame gathering at Bullpen Plaza along with a co-branded hat.

The Serious Contender package steps things up further with Citi Pavilion seating, a brewery party, a co-branded hat and $12 in stored value. At the top of the ladder, the Most Eligible package includes Fiesta Deck seating, all-inclusive food and drinks, a co-branded hat and a pregame party at Willets Point Brewery. First pitch for the Mets-Brewers matchup is set for 7:10pm.

The Singles Night Out lands on a homestand already packed with promotions — it follows Women's Night on August 26 and coincides with a Citi Field giveaway of a Mets Mystery Dumpling, according to MLB.com. Fans headed to the ballpark should also note Citi Field's entry rules for special-event packages, which limit bags to clear totes, small clutches, or medical and diaper bags.

A Rough Season Looking for a Spark

The promotion arrives during one of the Mets' toughest stretches in years. As of mid-August, the team sat in last place in the National League East with a 53-68 record, according to The Mirror US. The struggles came despite Major League Baseball's second-highest payroll, at $377 million, and led the front office to fire manager Carlos Mendoza in June, replacing him with senior vice president of player development Andy Green as interim manager, as reported by The Guardian.

It's been an eventful year at Citi Field even beyond the standings. Earlier this season, the ballpark endured a franchise-long 12-game home losing streak before the Mets finally snapped it against Minnesota, as Hoodline detailed in its coverage of the skid's darkest stretch and the team's eventual win that ended the drought.

Betting on the Local Dating Pool

The timing isn't purely coincidental with broader shifts in how New Yorkers date. Census Bureau data compiled by Census Reporter shows 47% of New York City residents 15 and older have never been married, giving the Mets a sizable local pool of singles to court for a night out at the ballpark. Nationally, the trend is even starker over time: 29.1% of mid-life adults ages 30 to 49 had never married as of 2021, up from just 7.1% in 1970, according to data cited by the National Center for Family & Marriage Research.

Whether any of it produces lasting matches is, naturally, outside the team's hands — the Mets aren't promising anyone leaves Citi Field with a soulmate. But between the wristbands, the interactive experiences and a lineup of packages built for singles to mix and mingle, the club is at least giving lonely fans a reason to root for something new this season.
