Houston's Miller Outdoor Theatre is presenting the 5th Annual Miller Summer Mixtape, a free showcase built around the city's homegrown indie scene, at its longtime home in Hermann Park. The bill brings together Astro Inn, Astralace, Vortxz and DJ Mohawk Steve, with 94.5 The Buzz personality Alex Middleton hosting the evening. Admission costs nothing, in keeping with the venue's long-running policy of never charging a ticket price.
As reported by CultureMap Houston, the performance will be livestreamed for anyone who can't make it out to the park in person. The outlet also notes that, like all Miller Outdoor Theatre events, the mixtape is subject to change because of weather or other concerns, and organizers advise checking with the venue beforehand.
A Season Delayed by Renovation
This year's Mixtape lands during a rebuilt version of the Miller Outdoor Theatre season. Houston First Corporation carried out a $1.8 million infrastructure and HVAC renovation at the venue in late 2025 and into 2026, upgrading aging climate control systems, electrical panels and stage flooring, according to Community Impact.
The project pushed the 2025 season to an early close in October and delayed the 2026 season's opening until June, per the same report.
Genre-Hopping Through Houston's Music Scene
The Summer Mixtape series has rotated through different corners of the city's music scene since it began, according to Miller Outdoor Theatre. The 2023 edition leaned into Texas country and blues, while the 2024 show partnered with KTSU 90.9 FM's "The Vibe" for a night of urban alternative and norteño acts hosted by KTSU personalities Marcus Sullivan and Taylor Getwood.
This year's lineup pivots again, spotlighting Houston's indie and Latino rock talent through acts like Vortxz and Astro Inn. The venue was dedicated on May 12, 1923, and marked its 100th anniversary in 2023 with a season-long run of free cultural programming.
Vortxz and Astro Inn Anchor a Homegrown Bill
Vortxz, one of this year's headliners, is a Latino indie-rock band founded in Pasadena, Texas and fronted by singer-songwriter Isaias "Rambo" Rodarte. The group blends new-wave indie rock, Rock en Español and alternative rock, and has toured nationally across the West Coast while racking up more than 1.2 million TikTok likes, as reported by Click2Houston.
Also on the bill is Astro Inn, a Houston-based alt-R&B and indie rock outfit fronted by Nick Serena. Serena previously went viral on TikTok with more than one million views before releasing singles like "Aphrodisiaddict," according to MuseWire. The band promotes its sound on social media as "sexy rock."
How Free Seating Works at the Venue
Miller Outdoor Theatre's covered pavilion holds 1,705 fixed seats plus 20 wheelchair-accessible spaces, per Wikipedia. An adjoining 80,000-square-foot lawn, known to regulars as "The Hill," holds roughly 4,500 more spectators and requires no ticket at all.
Reserving a covered seat requires a bit more planning. Free assigned pavilion tickets go live online at 10 a.m. the day before each performance, capped at four per person, according to Miller Outdoor Theatre. The venue bills itself as the nation's largest "always free" performance program, funded by the City of Houston through the Houston Arts Alliance and the Miller Theatre Advisory Board using hotel occupancy tax revenue. This year's edition also drew sponsorship from Houston specialty grocer Phoenicia Specialty Foods, alongside venue partners Reliant Energy and the Houston Music Advisory Board.

Hosting duties fall to Alex Middleton, a producer and co-host on iHeartMedia's 94.5 The Buzz (KTBZ-FM). Middleton works on the station's flagship "Rod Ryan Morning Show" and co-hosts the "Pass The Gravy" comedy podcast, according to 94.5 The Buzz. His presence puts a familiar Houston radio voice behind a lineup built almost entirely around the city's emerging artists, per CultureMap Houston's listing for the event.
