This year's tailgate at Helfaer Field, the youth baseball diamond just outside American Family Field on the former site of County Stadium, runs from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. and will provide free food for the first 500 attendees, per the same account. Former Milwaukee Bucks All-Star and current assistant coach Vin Baker, who openly shares his personal recovery story and operates the Vin Baker Recovery Center in Milwaukee, has served as a prominent local recovery advocate during these sports recovery night events, according to the University of Hartford. Baker participated in a March 2026 Bucks recovery event, the university notes.
A Ballpark Built for Both Options
American Family Field already maintains designated alcohol-free family seating in Sections 217, 309 and 417, which strictly prohibit alcoholic beverages and abusive language during home games, according to SoberFan. The ballpark also offers non-alcoholic beer brands and mocktails at select concession stands, per the same source, giving Recovery Night attendees options beyond the dedicated tailgate.
Recovery at Marquette's involvement traces back to the university's Collegiate Recovery Program, launched in 2025, which has supported more than 30 students in recovery and distributed over 7,000 cups of free cold brew via its mobile Coffee Bike to reduce substance-use stigma across campus, according to Marquette University. The program operates inside Marquette's Wellness and Recreation facility.
Timing Lines Up With National Recovery Month
The September 8 game coincides with National Recovery Month, an annual observance held every September across the United States to raise public awareness and support individuals in recovery from mental health and substance use disorders, according to RISE Drug Free MKE. The event also arrives against a backdrop of improving local overdose numbers. Milwaukee County officials released 2025 overdose mortality data in April showing 387 total fatal overdoses, a 17.7% drop from 2024 and a 42.6% decline from the peak of 674 deaths recorded in 2022, according to the Office of the Milwaukee County Executive. Fatal opioid overdoses specifically fell 54.6% over the same three-year period, county officials said.
