A mini bike rider was left in critical condition yesterday after colliding with a vehicle near Chandler Park Drive and Dickerson Street on Detroit's east side, and the driver kept going. Medics rushed the rider to a local hospital, where he remained listed in critical condition as investigators worked to track down the vehicle involved.
According to ClickOnDetroit, the mini bike was traveling west on Chandler Park Drive when it struck a vehicle that was heading south on Dickerson Street. That vehicle continued south on Dickerson after the crash instead of stopping, police said. Investigators cautioned that details remain subject to change as the case develops.
Fatal Squad Takes Over the Investigation
The Detroit Police Department's Fatal Squad Unit, a specialized team assigned to complex crash reconstructions and collisions involving severe or life-threatening injuries, is handling the case, per the City of Detroit Board of Police Commissioners. Police have asked anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP, reach out through Detroit Rewards TV, or contact the Fatal Squad Unit directly at 313-596-2260. The investigation remains ongoing, police said, and it is not yet clear whether the fleeing vehicle has been identified.
Chandler Park Drive runs along Chandler Park itself, in the historic Villages of Parkside neighborhood, an area where the $180M Parkside revitalization plan launched last year, per Hoodline. Whether any nearby cameras captured the crash or the vehicle's escape south on Dickerson Street has not been addressed by investigators.
Why Fleeing the Scene Carries Steep Penalties
Under Michigan Compiled Laws Section 257.617, a driver who flees the scene of a crash involving serious impairment of a body function or death commits a felony punishable by up to five years in prison and a fine of up to $5,000, according to the Michigan Legislature. Separately, Michigan Compiled Laws Section 257.619 requires any driver involved in a collision to stop, provide their name, address, and vehicle registration, show their license, and render reasonable aid to anyone injured — obligations the driver in this case appears to have ignored.
Mini bikes themselves occupy murky legal territory on Michigan streets. Standard stock mini bikes are generally barred from public roadways because they lack required equipment like DOT-approved lighting, turn signals, mirrors, and valid registration, according to Kalamazoo County government guidance on the vehicles. That restriction typically confines them to private property or off-road areas rather than city corridors like Chandler Park Drive.
A Rising Toll for Non-Occupant Road Users
The crash lands amid a troubling statewide trend for people outside of vehicles. Final 2025 crash data from the Michigan State Police Criminal Justice Information Center, released this month, showed that while total Michigan roadway fatalities fell 3% to 1,065, pedestrian fatalities surged 18% statewide, climbing from 156 in 2024 to 184 in 2025. Nationally, hit-and-run crashes reached roughly 919,000 in 2023 and accounted for about one in four pedestrian and cyclist deaths, according to a March 2026 brief from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety.
Regionally, a Southeast Michigan Council of Governments traffic safety analysis found speeding was a factor in 54 traffic fatalities across Southeast Michigan in 2024, while lane departures were involved in 39% of all fatal crashes. No arrests have been announced in Friday's Chandler Park Drive crash, and the mini bike rider's current medical condition beyond the initial critical listing has not been updated.
