A 72-year-old woman was robbed of her gold chain at the corner of East 203rd Street and Valentine Avenue in Bedford Park after a man riding a blue moped rode up, ripped the chain from her neck, and sped off in an unknown direction. The woman sustained minor bruising in the attack but refused medical attention at the scene.
Police have released images of the suspect and are asking the public for help identifying him, as reported by News 12 Bronx. Anyone with information is urged to call 1-800-577-TIPS. The robbery falls within the jurisdiction of the NYPD's 52nd Precinct, headquartered at 3016 Webster Avenue, which patrols Bedford Park along with Fordham, Kingsbridge, Norwood, Bronx Park, and University Heights, according to NYC.gov.
Because the suspect used physical force to overcome the victim's resistance rather than simply grabbing the chain unnoticed, the crime is classified under New York law as robbery rather than larceny. Under New York Penal Law § 160.05, forcibly yanking a necklace off a victim's neck constitutes Robbery in the Third Degree, a Class D felony punishable by up to seven years in state prison, per the NYS Senate.
A Pattern of Moped Muggings in the 52nd Precinct
This is not an isolated incident in the neighborhood. Just days earlier, on August 21, two moped-riding robbers forcibly ripped a gold chain off a 30-year-old man and physically assaulted him near Van Cortlandt Park South, also within the 52nd Precinct, according to Hoodline’s earlier report.
Back in March, NYPD detectives released surveillance images seeking a moped duo linked to a multi-incident robbery pattern across the same precinct, including a necklace snatching on Hull Avenue in Norwood and a robbery on Briggs Avenue in Bedford Park, as reported by the Norwood News. And in April, News 12 Bronx reported that investigators were searching for a moped duo responsible for six chain-snatching robberies across the Bronx between March and April, with victims as young as 14 targeted.
Robbery Numbers Down Precinct-Wide, But Concerns Persist
NYPD CompStat records show 119 reported robberies in the 52nd Precinct through late July 2026, a 5.6% decrease from the 126 robbery complaints logged during the same period in 2025. Citywide, overall robberies fell by 11.8% during the first half of 2026 compared to the year before, alongside historic lows in homicides and shooting incidents, according to a midyear analysis from Vital City.
City officials have also pointed to a broader crackdown on unregistered mopeds as a factor in declining moped-related crime. Mayor Eric Adams announced in June 2025 that NYPD seizures of more than 100,000 illegal mopeds, scooters, and ghost vehicles since 2022 had driven a 57.2% reduction in moped-involved index crime and an 85.7% drop in moped grand larceny patterns. By May of this year, officers had confiscated over 5,700 illegal mopeds and scooters citywide, with more than 200 of the seized vehicles publicly crushed on Staten Island, per Spectrum News NY1.
Despite those citywide gains, unregistered mopeds remain a persistent tool for street robberies because they typically lack license plates, making suspects harder to trace after they flee. New York State DMV regulations require all motorized mopeds operated on public roads to be registered and driven with a valid license, with faster Class A mopeds requiring a Class M motorcycle license. Investigators have not said whether the moped used in the Bedford Park attack was registered.
Elderly Victim Among a String of Targets
The Bedford Park case adds to a growing list of moped-linked chain robberies that have rattled residents across the Bronx this month, from a gunpoint chain robbery in Van Cortlandt Village to a robbery crew striking a driver at a red light on Exterior Street. Investigators have not indicated whether the suspect in the Bedford Park robbery is connected to any of the earlier incidents in the precinct.
For now, police are relying on the public to help identify the man seen in the released images. No arrests had been announced as of Thursday.
