A roadside sensor in Mukwonago was turned into a costly target after someone allegedly opened fire on the equipment with a shotgun. Police now want to know who took aim at the device—and why.
The damaged equipment included a street sensor and solar panel at the intersection of Sugden and Beulah roads, according to FOX6 News Milwaukee. Investigators believe the shooting happened sometime in July, and the repairs are expected to cost thousands of dollars.
Police believe the vandalism may be connected to the growing anti-Flock camera movement, even though the Town of Mukwonago does not have Flock cameras. No suspect has been identified, and the department has not announced a motive beyond that working theory.
Mukwonago Equipment Was Not A Flock Camera
The incident comes as Wisconsin communities continue debating automated license-plate readers and other surveillance technology. Several municipalities have ended or reconsidered Flock contracts amid privacy and misuse concerns, while other law-enforcement agencies continue defending the systems as investigative tools, Wisconsin Public Radio reported in June.
The Town of Mukwonago Police Department lists 262-363-5188 as its non-emergency number, and anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call that line. Tips can also be shared anonymously, if available through the caller's preferred reporting method, while investigators work to identify the person responsible.
