A two-vehicle collision on State Route 121 just south of Ramal Road in Napa left at least one person with major injuries yesterday, prompting a temporary closure of the highway in both directions. The crash was logged by the California Highway Patrol at 7:25 PM on the northbound side of the highway, and emergency crews soon arrived to find one vehicle resting off the roadway with airbags deployed in the involved cars.
According to Pacific Attorney Group, CHP officers who responded to the scene confirmed that at least one person suffered major injuries in the wreck. The roadway was initially blocked in both directions before crews later closed only the southbound lanes, funneling traffic through a single northbound lane while the investigation continued.
The highway reopened at 8:28 PM, roughly an hour after the crash was first reported, per the same account. CHP has not released the cause of the collision, and the case remains under investigation.
A Notoriously Dangerous Stretch of Highway
Sunday's wreck adds to a long list of serious crashes clustered near the Ramal Road intersection on State Route 121, known officially as the Carneros Highway between SR 37 and SR 29. The two-lane road links Sonoma and Napa counties and carries a mix of agricultural freight, commercial big rigs, daily commuters, and wine-country tourists, a combination that has produced repeated safety headaches over the years, according to California Accident News.
Just under a year earlier, in September 2025, a multi-vehicle crash involving a sand-hauling big rig, a dump truck, and a van struck near Burndale Road close to Ramal Road, critically injuring at least one person and shutting the highway for several hours. Further back, in November 2017, a big rig hauling thousands of chickens overturned near Ramal Road and blocked both directions of SR 121 between Ramal Road and Napa Road for nearly 12 hours, as reported by Sonoma Valley Patch at the time. And in September 2014, a 26-year-old driver was killed just north of Ramal Road in a head-on collision after crossing the double-yellow lines into oncoming traffic, that outlet also reported.
State and Regional Agencies Have Targeted the Corridor
The recurring danger near Ramal Road has not gone unnoticed by transportation planners. Metropolitan Transportation Commission project records from December 2024 show Caltrans allocated safety funding for high-density soil densification along SR 121, starting 0.2 miles north of Ramal Road, work aimed at addressing sub-surface soil instability near the area's marshlands. In March 2024, Caltrans and local transportation authorities also broke ground on a $27 million roundabout project at the SR 121 and Route 116 intersection in nearby Schellville, a junction that had previously logged higher-than-average collision rates, according to California Highways.
Countywide numbers underline why the corridor draws such attention. Napa Valley Transportation Authority safety records published in October 2025 found that 608 of the 4,908 traffic collision injuries recorded in Napa County between 2015 and 2021 were classified as severe or fatal, data that local leaders are using to shape a Vision Zero action plan aimed at eliminating traffic deaths. Separately, UC Berkeley's Transportation Injury Mapping System reported that Napa County saw 638 injury- or fatality-producing crashes in 2022, compared with 639 in 2021 and 578 in 2020.
Yesterday's closure meets the threshold CHP uses to designate a SigAlert, defined as any unplanned incident that shuts down at least one lane of travel for 30 minutes or more. While investigators continue working to determine exactly what caused this latest crash, the incident adds to a stretch of highway that has repeatedly tested both drivers and the state agencies tasked with making it safer.
