A 33-year-old man was shot in the buttocks early Thursday outside a residential building on Sheffield Avenue in New Lots, and police are still searching for the gunman who ran off on foot. The shooting happened around 12:40 a.m. at 177 Sheffield Avenue, and the victim was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he is expected to recover.
Police found the wounded man at the scene, according to News 12 Brooklyn, which first reported the shooting. EMS transported him to Brookdale Hospital, and as of the outlet's report, no arrests had been made. Police sources told the outlet they are looking for a man last seen wearing black sweatpants and a white shirt, who fled north on foot on Pennsylvania Avenue after the shooting.
The address sits inside a four-family residential building with a commercial space on the ground floor, a property built in 1930 that totals 4,581 square feet, according to PropertyShark. Sheffield Avenue in New Lots is lined with a similar mix of multi-family homes and small commercial storefronts.
A Precinct That Hasn't Followed the Citywide Trend
The shooting adds to a running tally in the 75th Precinct, which covers East New York and New Lots. As of August 22, the precinct had logged 28 shooting incidents so far in 2026, compared to 27 during the same stretch last year, according to CBS News — essentially flat year over year even as gun violence has plunged elsewhere in the city. The precinct has a long history on this front: a Patch analysis of NYPD data found the 75th Precinct recorded 1,383 shooting incidents between 2006 and March 2026, the highest total of any command in New York City over that two-decade span, per a report from Patch.
That local pattern stands in contrast to the citywide picture. New York City logged just 381 shooting incidents through July 2026, the fewest ever recorded for the first seven months of any year, and Brooklyn went 29 consecutive days without a single homicide during the summer — the borough's longest murder-free stretch on record, according to figures reported by Police1. Citywide shooting incidents had already fallen to a record-low 322 during the first half of the year, breaking the previous mark of 337 set in 2018 and 2025, per figures reported by FOX 5 New York.
Recovery Underway at Brookdale
The injured man is being treated at Brookdale University Hospital Medical Center, which operates the Level II Trauma Center serving East New York and the surrounding area. The hospital treats more than 20,000 trauma-related emergency visits a year and serves over one million residents across eastern Brooklyn, according to One Brooklyn Health. Medical assessment indicates he is expected to recover from his injuries.
The shooting is the latest in a string of violent incidents Hoodline has tracked in the neighborhood in recent days, including a fatal Pink Houses shooting reported just days earlier within the same 75th Precinct coverage area. No arrests have been announced in the Sheffield Avenue shooting, and it remains unclear whether surveillance cameras along Sheffield or Pennsylvania avenues captured the suspect as he fled, or what motivated the attack.
Potential Charges If Suspect Is Caught
If investigators determine the shooting was an intentional attempt on the victim's life, the suspect could eventually face charges of attempted second-degree murder, a Class B violent felony under New York Penal Law that carries a mandatory prison term of 5 to 25 years, according to the New York State Senate. Separately, possessing a loaded firearm with intent to use it unlawfully against another person is classified as a Class C violent felony under state law, carrying a mandatory minimum sentence ranging from 3.5 to 15 years in state prison. Neither charge has been filed, as police have not yet identified or located a suspect.
