New Port Richey police are asking for help identifying people who allegedly used a fraudulent or counterfeit credit card to buy several thousand dollars’ worth of collectible Pokémon cards. The individuals reportedly left the area in a late-model Chevrolet Malibu, and detectives believe the transaction may be connected to similar fraud in multiple jurisdictions.
According to a report by Tampa Free Press, investigators have not publicly named the suspected buyers or identified the local business involved. Police are asking anyone who recognizes the individuals, knows the vehicle or has information about the purchase to contact Detective J. Ioppolo.
Police Suspect More Than One Fraudulent Purchase
The case is being handled as an economic-crimes investigation, an area covered by the New Port Richey Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Bureau. The New Port Richey Police Department says its detectives investigate property crimes, cybercrimes and economic crimes, including cases that may stretch beyond city limits.
Similar Pokémon-related fraud and theft cases have surfaced elsewhere this year as collectible cards continue to command serious money. In June, NBC Los Angeles reported that police were seeking additional victims in alleged cases where counterfeit cash was used to obtain Pokémon cards in Hollywood and North Hollywood.
