A brand-new elementary school named for one of Southwest ISD's longest-serving trustees is opening its doors to students for the first time, with classes already nearing capacity as families prepare for the first bell. Juan Alvarado Elementary sits at 4495 SW Verano Parkway in Von Ormy, built to serve roughly 550 students pulled from the Spicewood Park, Sky Harbour, and Southwest Elementary attendance zones.
The campus carried an estimated $39.9 million construction budget, funded through the $250 million bond that Southwest ISD voters approved in May 2023, according to Southwest ISD. That bond was designed to address rapid growth by funding two new elementary schools on San Antonio's South Side, and Alvarado Elementary is the district's 12th elementary campus, joining a system that previously operated 19 total schools serving nearly 15,000 students across San Antonio, Von Ormy, Lytle, and Macdona. Named for a Trustee Who Shaped the District
The school honors Juan Alvarado, a longtime Southwest ISD employee and trustee who served on the district's board from 1980 to 2003 as its first Hispanic board member. He helped establish the district's Mariachi program during his tenure, per reporting on his legacy. Denisse Hernandez-Gonzalez, a Southwest ISD alumna who previously served as principal of Sky Harbour Elementary, was selected to lead the new campus as its inaugural principal, guiding the Alvarado Lions through their first year.
A Closure Elsewhere Made Room Here
Alvarado Elementary's opening is tied directly to a consolidation decision made across town. In November 2025, the Southwest ISD Board of Trustees voted unanimously to close Sky Harbour Elementary at the end of the 2025–2026 school year, re-zoning roughly 200 students into Alvarado's new attendance boundaries. The closure was projected to save the district between $6.4 million and $6.5 million in maintenance and operational costs, addressing a budget deficit tied to shifting enrollment patterns.
That rebalancing reflects a broader demographic split playing out across southwestern Bexar County. Southwest ISD built the new campus in Von Ormy, outside Interstate 410, because rapid residential development is pushing districtwide enrollment projections past 16,000 students by 2031, while older, landlocked communities inside Loop 1604 have seen falling student counts. The district's rebalancing policy targets at least 85% seat utilization across elementary campuses to cut down on utility, maintenance, and portable-building expenses, with schools like Indian Creek and Hidden Cove rebalanced closer to 650 students apiece.
Leadership Change and a Rising Grade
Alvarado Elementary opens amid notable turnover at the top of the district. Southwest ISD Superintendent Jeanette Ball resigned in August 2026 after leading the district since early 2023, and trustees appointed Brandon Crisp, a 17-year district veteran who previously served as deputy superintendent during the campus rebalancing planning, as interim superintendent.
The leadership shift comes as the district's academic standing has improved. According to KABB, the Texas Education Agency upgraded Southwest ISD's district grade, though accounts of the exact shift differ: KABB's report describes an upgrade from a C to an A, while other reporting on the same TEA re-scoring describes the district moving from a C to a B grade after the agency rescored middle-school language arts and English I exams districtwide. The Texas Education Agency reportedly contacted Southwest ISD officials about the change on August 20, according to KABB's account.
For now, the district's attention turns to the Lions taking their seats in Von Ormy. Southwest Independent School District is growing even as its district grade improves, and Alvarado Elementary's near-capacity enrollment on opening day is an early sign of just how quickly that growth is reshaping which schoolhouses fill up and which ones close.
