A Nirvana tribute act built around a former touring metal drummer is rolling into Northwest Las Vegas next month, and its frontman is set to work double duty on the same stage. Smells Like Nirvana will perform live at Santa Fe Station Hotel & Casino on Saturday, Sept. 5, at 8 p.m., recreating the catalog of the legendary Seattle band inside the resort's Chrome Showroom at 4949 N. Rancho Drive.
The band is fronted by vocalist and guitarist Paul Wandtke, a Chicago-based musician who previously worked as the touring drummer for the Grammy-nominated metal band Trivium and performed in the musical Rock of Ages, according to Eye On Sun Valley. Wandtke formed the tribute band to honor Kurt Cobain's legacy after years of working as a professional drummer for hire, per the same outlet. As reported by FOX5 Las Vegas, general admission tickets are priced at $29.80, excluding applicable fees, and can be purchased through Ticketmaster.
Wandtke will not just be closing out the night. He also fronts the show's opening act, Dead Original, alongside bassist Mike Petrasek, meaning he will perform both original grunge material and the Nirvana tribute set on the same bill, according to High Noon Saloon. Dead Original serves as Wandtke's primary outlet for recording and touring original 1990s-style grunge music, the venue notes. The band released its 13-track debut album Bought and Sold in 2021 through TLG Entertainment/INgrooves, featuring grunge-inspired songs centered on themes of mental health and personal frustration, as reported by Screamer Magazine. Wandtke self-produced and tracked most of the album's instruments in his home studio, per the same account.
No Backing Tracks, No Shortcuts
Smells Like Nirvana performs its sets completely live without click tracks or backing tracks, aiming to preserve the unpolished, raw stage philosophy that defined Nirvana's original shows, according to the Rochester Opera House. That commitment nods to Nirvana's reputation for raw, unpredictable live performances during the 1990s grunge era, the venue notes.
Per FOX5 Las Vegas, the concert is open to fans of all ages, though attendees under 21 must be accompanied by an adult at least 21 years old. The station's report also notes that fans can submit song requests in advance through the Smells Like Nirvana tribute website.
An Intimate Room With Local Roots
The Chrome Showroom seats 510 people, offering an intimate setting for live music, comedy, and tribute acts in Northwest Las Vegas, according to Station Casinos. Santa Fe Station regularly hosts touring tribute bands and comedy acts in the room. The resort itself opened in February 1991 as the Santa Fe before Station Casinos acquired it in 2000, growing over the years into a 36-acre property that was once famous for housing Las Vegas's only public ice skating rink, per Wikipedia.
Las Vegas actually has a small piece of Nirvana history of its own. The band played Calamity Jayne's Nashville Nevada on Aug. 16, 1990, while touring with Sonic Youth, marking one of its few Southern Nevada appearances before Kurt Cobain's death in 1994, according to LiveNIRVANA. Melvins drummer Dale Crover filled in on drums for Nirvana during that West Coast run, the site notes.
A Catalog Still Selling Decades Later
Nirvana has sold more than 75 million records worldwide and over 27.6 million certified album units in the United States since forming in 1987, according to Wikipedia's entry on the band's discography. The group released only three studio albums before Cobain's death in 1994. Its 1991 album Nevermind achieved RIAA Diamond status for 10 million U.S. sales in 1999 and had reached 750 weeks on the Billboard 200 chart by December 2025, according to Forbes. Geffen Records had originally anticipated selling roughly 250,000 copies of the album upon its release, per the same report.
Wandtke's ties to the Nirvana story extend beyond the stage. He was featured in chapter 27 of author Kelly Catlin's biography Kurt Cobain: Forever in Bloom, discussing how Nirvana shaped his musical upbringing and influenced his tribute performance, according to the Smells Like Nirvana website. Half of the proceeds from the biography are donated to charitable organizations, the site notes.
