Frontier Park’s horse arena in Graham is getting a long-awaited roof, and the county is marking the upgrade with a ribbon cutting this Friday. The new open-air cover is set to give riders, horses and organizers a protected place to keep events moving when the Pacific Northwest does what it does best.
The ceremony is scheduled for 2 to 4 p.m. at Frontier Park, celebrating completion of the Frontier Park Equestrian Complex Cover, according to a post from Pierce County. County materials describe the facility as a protected, all-weather space supporting riding events, training and regional equestrian programming.
More Room For Horses And Community Events
The completed project spans 27,000 square feet of covered complex, Pierce Prairie Post reported in its announcement of the ceremony. The open-air format adds shelter while preserving the arena’s outdoor feel, giving the park a more dependable venue for equestrian events and gatherings.
Frontier Park sits on Meridian between Puyallup and Graham and is home to the Pierce County Fair, Highland Games, equestrian shows, scouting events and other community uses, according to the Pierce County Frontier Park page. The county also lists existing horse facilities, trails and an accessible mounting ramp, making the cover an expansion of a complex already used by riders and visitors.
A Project Years In The Making
The arena cover was not a quick barn-raising. A Pierce County budget report traces the project to an initial 2018 scoping study, with a $1.8 million state Commerce grant secured in 2022 and another $1.3 million grant in 2024 after the plan expanded back to a full-size cover. The same report says permitting took months and a consultant contract expired before a new procurement was required, stretching the timeline before construction could move ahead.
The ceremony also lands just ahead of the 2026 Pierce County Fair, which runs next Thursday through Sunday at Frontier Park, according to the fair’s official website. For a park that juggles equestrian events and major community gatherings, the new roof arrives at a particularly busy stretch of the calendar.
